What You'll Need
- Sonos One SL
- Sonos app (iOS or Android)
- Wi-Fi network
- A power outlet near your preferred location
Step-by-Step Setup
- Download the Sonos app if you do not already have it. Create a Sonos account or sign in.
- Plug in the Sonos One SL and wait for the small LED on the front to flash green, which means it is ready for setup.
- Add the speaker in the Sonos app:
- Tap the "Add" button and select Sonos One SL
- The app will walk you through connecting via your phone
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network. If this is your first Sonos speaker, you will enter your network credentials. If you already have a Sonos system, the One SL joins automatically.
- Assign the speaker to a room so you can easily target it with playback commands.
- Run Trueplay tuning if you are on iOS. Walk around the room holding your phone while test tones play, and the speaker calibrates itself to your space. Android users get basic auto-tuning instead.
Placement and Sound Tips
The Sonos One SL shares the same audio hardware as the Sonos One but without a microphone. For the best sound, place it on a solid surface at ear level when seated. Bookshelves work well, but keep it a couple of inches from the back wall to avoid overemphasized bass.
If you are using it as a standalone speaker, corners can boost the bass but may make things boomy. Experiment with pulling it out from the wall a bit. Running Trueplay after settling on a spot makes a noticeable difference in clarity.
Multi-Room and Surround Setup
The One SL fits naturally into a larger Sonos system. Group it with other Sonos speakers in the app to play the same music in multiple rooms at once. Just tap the grouping icon next to any room in the Sonos app.
One of the most popular uses for the One SL is as a surround speaker for a Sonos soundbar like the Beam, Arc, or Ray. You need two of them (or a mix of One and One SL) for a surround pair. In the Sonos app, go to the room with your soundbar, tap Settings, then Add Surround Speakers, and follow the steps. Place them slightly behind and to the sides of your listening position for the best effect.
You can also create a stereo pair with another One or One SL for music listening. This gives you proper left and right channels, which is a big upgrade over a single speaker for a desk or small room setup.
Troubleshooting
- Speaker not discovered by the app: Check that the LED is flashing green. If not, unplug the speaker, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Also make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Audio goes out of sync in groups: This usually happens when speakers are on different network types (some on Wi-Fi, some on Ethernet). Put all speakers on the same connection type, or bond one speaker to your router via Ethernet and let the rest use Sonos's own mesh network.
- Sound drops or stutters: Wi-Fi congestion is the most common cause. Try switching your router to a less crowded channel, or run an Ethernet cable to one Sonos speaker to create a more stable backbone for the system.
- Trueplay not available: Trueplay with the walk-around calibration requires an iOS device. If you only have Android, the speaker still applies basic auto-tuning, but you will not get the full room calibration.
- Factory reset: Unplug the speaker. Press and hold the Play/Pause button while plugging the power back in. Hold until the LED flashes amber and white, then release.
