What You'll Need

  • Sonos Sub Mini
  • A compatible Sonos speaker (Beam, Ray, Era 100, Era 300, One, etc.)
  • Sonos app (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Place the Sub Mini in your preferred location. Its compact cylindrical shape fits easily next to a couch, under a side table, or beside a media console.
  2. Plug in the power cable and wait for the LED to appear on the front of the speaker.
  3. Open the Sonos app on your phone.
  4. Add the Sub Mini to an existing room:
    • Go to the room that has a compatible Sonos speaker
    • Tap the room settings and select "Add Sub"
    • Choose Sub Mini when it appears
  5. Complete the pairing by following the on-screen prompts.
  6. Adjust the sub level in the app. Start at the default and raise or lower it depending on how much bass you want.

Placement Tips

The Sub Mini has a cylindrical design that takes up very little floor space, making it easy to tuck into a corner or beside a piece of furniture. Like any subwoofer, placing it in a corner will boost the bass output but can make it sound boomy. For a more balanced sound, try placing it along a wall but away from corners.

The dual force-cancelling drivers are mounted inside the cylinder facing each other, so the Sub Mini produces almost no external vibration. You can place it on hard floors without worrying about it rattling or buzzing. That said, avoid placing it directly on a thick rug, which can muffle the output slightly.

Experiment with a few different spots. Even moving the Sub Mini a couple of feet can make a noticeable difference in how the bass fills your room.

Compatibility Notes

The Sub Mini pairs with most Sonos speakers including the Beam, Ray, Era 100, Era 300, One, One SL, and SYMFONISK speakers. It does not pair with the Sonos Arc. If you have an Arc, you need the full-size Sonos Sub instead. You also cannot pair the Sub Mini with a Sonos Five or a stereo pair since those speakers have their own bass capacity.

Tuning

After adding the Sub Mini, run Trueplay again for the room to recalibrate the full system including the sub. The Sub Level control in the Sonos app lets you dial the bass up or down relative to the main speaker. Start at the default and adjust based on what sounds good to you. If dialogue on movies sounds muddy, try lowering the sub level a notch.

Troubleshooting

  • Sub Mini not found in the app: Make sure the LED is flashing and the speaker is powered on. Keep your phone close during setup. If it still does not appear, unplug the Sub Mini for 10 seconds and try again.
  • Too much bass: Lower the sub level in the Sonos app under room settings. You can also try moving the Sub Mini away from walls and corners to reduce bass buildup.
  • Bass sounds thin or weak: Move the Sub Mini closer to a wall to reinforce the low end. Also check the sub level setting and make sure it has not been turned down too far.
  • Audio out of sync with main speaker: This is rare but can happen with network issues. Make sure both the Sub Mini and your main speaker have good Wi-Fi signal. Restart both devices if the problem persists.
  • Factory reset: Unplug the Sub Mini. Press and hold the Connect button on the back while plugging the power back in. Keep holding until the LED flashes amber and white, then release.
