The Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 (No Neutral) is a Zigbee-connected wall switch designed for homes that do not have a neutral wire at the switch box. It replaces your existing wall switch and lets you control your lights through the Aqara Home app, voice assistants, and physical button presses. This guide covers the complete electrical installation and software setup.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 (No Neutral)
  • Aqara Hub (M2, M3, or Camera Hub G3) already set up on your network
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • Flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers
  • Voltage tester or multimeter
  • Wire strippers (if needed)
  • Wire nuts or push-in connectors

Important Safety Warning

Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the switch you are replacing before starting any electrical work. Use a voltage tester to confirm that no power is flowing to the switch box. If you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring, hire a licensed electrician.

Checking Compatibility

  • This switch is designed for locations without a neutral wire. Most older homes have only a live (hot) wire and a load wire at the switch box.
  • The switch requires a minimum load of approximately 3W. Very low-wattage LED bulbs (under 3W) may flicker or not turn off completely. If you experience this, adding a small bypass capacitor (available from Aqara) to the light fixture can resolve the issue.
  • Verify that this model matches your region's electrical standards. The H1 No Neutral is available in US and EU versions with different form factors.

Removing the Existing Switch

  1. With the power confirmed off, remove the existing switch's faceplate by unscrewing or prying it off.
  2. Unscrew the switch from the electrical box and gently pull it out to expose the wires.
  3. Take note of which wire connects to which terminal. Typically, you will have a live wire (usually black or red) and a load wire going to the light fixture.
  4. Disconnect the wires from the old switch by loosening the terminal screws or releasing the push-in connectors.

Wiring the Aqara Switch

  1. Identify the wire terminals on the back of the Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1. The terminals are labeled L (live/line) and L1 (load). For the double-rocker version, there will also be an L2 terminal for the second load.
  2. Connect the live wire (the wire coming from your breaker panel) to the L terminal.
  3. Connect the load wire (the wire going to your light fixture) to the L1 terminal.
  4. If you have a ground wire (bare copper or green), connect it to the ground terminal on the switch or the grounding screw in the electrical box.
  5. Carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box and mount the switch using the included screws.
  6. Attach the faceplate or decorative cover.

Restoring Power and Pairing

  1. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The switch's LED indicator should light up.
  2. Open the Aqara Home app and tap the + icon.
  3. Select Smart Wall Switch H1 (No Neutral) from the device list.
  4. Choose the Aqara Hub you want to pair with.
  5. Press and hold the switch button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  6. Wait for the app to discover and connect to the switch.
  7. Assign the switch to a room and give it a name like "Kitchen Light Switch."

Configuring Switch Behavior

In the Aqara Home app, you can customize how the switch behaves:

  • Power-on state — Choose whether the light returns to its previous state, turns on, or stays off after a power outage.
  • LED indicator — Configure whether the switch LED is on when the light is on or off, or disable it entirely.
  • Decoupled mode — Enable this to separate the physical button from the relay. In decoupled mode, pressing the button sends a wireless signal (useful for triggering automations) without toggling the connected light.

Tips

  • The switch acts as a Zigbee router, helping extend the range of your Zigbee network to nearby sensors.
  • If your lights flicker when turned off, install the Aqara bypass capacitor at the light fixture.
  • Test the switch both physically and through the app after installation to confirm reliable operation.
