Installing Your Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen)

Before You Begin

The Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen) is a hardwired video doorbell that provides continuous 24/7 recording when paired with a Nest Aware Plus subscription. Unlike the battery model, this version requires existing doorbell wiring for power, ensuring the camera is always on without the need for recharging.

What You Will Need

• Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen)
• Existing doorbell wiring with a compatible transformer (16-24V AC, 10VA minimum)
• The Google Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
• A Google account
• A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
• A Phillips-head screwdriver
• A drill with appropriate bits for your wall material
• Wire strippers (if wires need to be trimmed)
• Optional: a compatible indoor chime or the Google Nest Doorbell Chime accessory

Step 1: Check Your Existing Wiring

1. Turn off the power to your existing doorbell at the circuit breaker.
2. Remove your current doorbell from the wall and locate the two wires connected to it.
3. Verify that your doorbell transformer provides 16 to 24 volts AC with at least 10VA. The transformer is usually located near your electrical panel, in the basement, or in a utility closet.
4. If your transformer does not meet these requirements, replace it with a compatible one before proceeding. An underpowered transformer will cause the doorbell to malfunction or fail to charge.
5. Check the condition of the wires — they should be in good shape with no fraying or corrosion.

Step 2: Set Up in the Google Home App

1. Open the Google Home app and tap the + icon.
2. Select Set up device, then New device.
3. Choose your home and allow the app to scan for nearby devices.
4. Scan the QR code on the doorbell or the included setup card.
5. Follow the prompts to connect the doorbell to your Wi-Fi network.
6. Assign the doorbell to a location (such as "Front Door") and name it.
7. It is recommended to complete the app setup before mounting the doorbell so you can verify the Wi-Fi connection at the mounting location.

Step 3: Install the Mounting Plate

1. Hold the mounting plate against the wall where your old doorbell was installed. Thread the existing doorbell wires through the opening in the plate.
2. Mark the screw hole locations with a pencil.
3. Drill pilot holes into the wall. Use wall anchors if mounting on brick, stone, or stucco.
4. Secure the mounting plate to the wall with the included screws.
5. If the plate needs angling to better face your walkway, use the included angled wedge between the plate and the wall.

Step 4: Connect the Wiring

1. Confirm the power is still off at the circuit breaker.
2. Strip the doorbell wires to expose approximately 1 centimeter (3/8 inch) of copper if needed.
3. Connect each wire to one of the two terminal screws on the back of the mounting plate. Polarity does not matter — either wire can go to either terminal.
4. Tighten the terminal screws firmly to ensure a solid electrical connection.
5. Tuck any excess wire behind the mounting plate so it does not interfere with attaching the doorbell.

Step 5: Attach and Power On the Doorbell

1. Slide the Nest Doorbell onto the mounting plate until it clicks securely into place.
2. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.
3. The doorbell's LED ring will light up as it boots. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for it to fully start and connect to Wi-Fi.
4. Open the Google Home app to verify the doorbell is online and showing a live camera feed.

Step 6: Configure Indoor Chime and Settings

1. If you have an existing mechanical or electronic chime, go to the doorbell's settings in the Google Home app and select your chime type so it rings properly when the doorbell is pressed.
2. Configure alert types — choose which events trigger notifications (people, packages, animals, vehicles).
3. Set up Activity Zones to focus detection on areas like the porch and walkway while ignoring the street.
4. For 24/7 continuous video recording, subscribe to Nest Aware Plus in the Google Home app. The wired doorbell supports continuous recording, unlike the battery version.

Tips for Best Performance

• The wired connection provides continuous power, so you do not need to worry about battery management. This also enables 24/7 recording with Nest Aware Plus.
• If your indoor chime does not ring or buzzes continuously, the transformer voltage may need adjustment. A compatible chime connector may be required for some setups.
• Position the doorbell at approximately 120 centimeters (4 feet) height for the best facial recognition angle.
• Regularly clean the camera lens with a soft cloth to maintain clear video quality.
