What You'll Need

  • Google Nest Thermostat E
  • Nest or Google Home app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small labels or masking tape for wire labeling
  • Optional: C-wire adapter if your system lacks a common wire

Before You Start

Head to nest.com/works and run the online compatibility checker. You will need to look at the wires connected to your current thermostat and enter them into the tool. The Nest E works with most 24V forced-air systems including gas, electric, oil, heat pump (without auxiliary/emergency heat on some models), and radiant systems. It does not support high-voltage (120V/240V) systems like electric baseboard heaters.

C-Wire Considerations

The Nest E can charge its internal battery from the heating and cooling wires during HVAC cycles, so many installations work fine without a C-wire. However, if your system has short run times or you notice low battery warnings after installation, you will need to add a C-wire. Options include running a new thermostat wire to the furnace, using a third-party C-wire adapter kit, or asking an HVAC tech to add one at the control board.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off HVAC power at the breaker box or the switch on your furnace. Confirm the system is off by trying to adjust your existing thermostat.
  2. Remove your old thermostat faceplate and take a clear photo of the wiring before touching anything. Label each wire with the letter of the terminal it connects to (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.).
  3. Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat and remove the old wall plate. If wires slip into the wall, wrap them around a pencil to hold them in place.
  4. Install the Nest E base plate using the built-in level bubble to keep it straight. Use the included screws and wall anchors if needed.
  5. Connect wires to the corresponding terminals on the Nest base. Push each wire firmly into the connector until it clicks. The Nest uses push-in connectors, so no screwdriver is needed for this step.
  6. Attach the display unit by pressing it onto the base until it snaps into place.
  7. Turn power back on at the breaker.
  8. Complete setup on the device and app:
    • The Nest E will power up and walk you through initial configuration
    • Select your system wiring (it auto-detects connected wires)
    • Connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
    • Download the Google Home app and add the thermostat to your home
    • Set your preferred temperatures and schedule

HVAC Compatibility Notes

The Nest E supports most conventional systems with up to 2 stages of heating and 1 stage of cooling. For heat pump systems, it handles single-stage heat pumps with auxiliary heat. If your system uses separate wires for a humidifier, dehumidifier, or ventilation fan, the Nest E may not have enough terminals. In that case, consider the Nest Learning Thermostat instead.

Smart Home Integration

The Nest E works natively with Google Assistant, so you can adjust the temperature, switch modes, or check the current reading with voice commands on any Google speaker or display. It also integrates with third-party platforms through the Google Home app, including selected SmartThings routines. For Home Assistant users, the Nest integration requires setting up a Google Cloud project for API access.

Energy Saving Features

  • Home/Away Assist uses your phone's location and the built-in sensor to detect when you leave, then switches to an energy-saving Eco temperature
  • Learning schedule adapts to your manual adjustments over the first week or two and builds a schedule around your habits
  • Nest Leaf icon appears on the display when you pick an energy-efficient temperature, helping guide you toward savings
  • Monthly energy reports are available in the app, showing usage patterns and tips

Troubleshooting

  • Low battery or delayed heating/cooling: This is the most common issue and usually means the thermostat is not getting enough power. Check whether you have a C-wire connected. If not, consider adding one or installing a C-wire adapter at the furnace control board.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The Nest E only supports 2.4GHz networks. Make sure you are not trying to join a 5GHz band. If your router combines both bands under one name, temporarily separate them for setup. Also check that your router is not blocking new devices with MAC filtering.
  • Blank or unresponsive display: Pull the display off the base and reattach it. If still blank, check that at least the R wire is connected and that the breaker is on. The frosted display is intentionally dim when idle and lights up when you approach.
  • HVAC not responding: Go to Settings and run a system test to check each wire. If the fan runs but heating or cooling does not start, double check that W (heat) and Y (cool) wires are connected to the right terminals. Also verify your furnace door panel is fully closed, as many furnaces have a safety switch.
  • Factory reset: On the thermostat, go to Settings, then Reset. You can reset just the schedule, or choose All Settings to return everything to factory defaults.
