What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Calla Outdoor Pathway Light
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • The included low-voltage power supply unit (PSU)
  • The included ground stake
  • A weatherproof outdoor power outlet (GFCI-protected recommended)
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • A garden trowel or small shovel for cable burial

Step 1: Choose Your Pathway Layout

The Hue Calla is a bollard-style pathway light that stands upright and casts light downward and outward, illuminating the ground around it. Plan where you want to place the light along your pathway, walkway, or garden border. For longer paths, you can purchase multiple Calla lights and connect them in a daisy chain to the same power supply. Space them approximately 6 to 8 feet apart for even coverage.

Step 2: Verify Zigbee Range

The Calla communicates with your Hue Bridge over Zigbee. Outdoor lights can be far from the Bridge inside your home, so ensure there are other Hue devices (like a porch light or garage bulb) between the Bridge and the Calla to act as Zigbee mesh relays. Test by temporarily plugging in the Calla near the Bridge first to confirm pairing, then move it to the final location.

Step 3: Install the Ground Stake

  1. Assemble the Calla by attaching the bollard to the ground stake according to the included instructions.
  2. Choose the exact position along your pathway.
  3. Push the ground stake firmly into the soil until the base of the bollard is at ground level. The stake should be deep enough that the light stands straight and does not wobble.
  4. If the ground is hard, use a garden trowel to loosen the soil first.

Step 4: Connect the Power Supply

  1. Run the low-voltage cable from the Calla to the included power supply unit.
  2. Connect the cable using the weatherproof twist-lock connector.
  3. Route the cable along the edge of the pathway, through garden beds, or under mulch to keep it hidden and protected.
  4. Dig a shallow trench (2 to 3 inches deep) with a trowel and bury the cable for a clean, professional look.
  5. Plug the power supply into your outdoor outlet.

Step 5: Power On and Pair

  1. Once plugged in, the Calla should illuminate with a default warm white light.
  2. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  3. Tap Add Light and wait for the Calla to appear.
  4. Pair it and assign it to an outdoor room like "Front Walkway" or "Garden Path."

Step 6: Adjust Color and Brightness

The Calla supports the full White and Color Ambiance range. While warm white is the most common choice for pathway lighting, you can customize the color for different purposes:

  • Warm white (2700K): Classic, welcoming pathway illumination for everyday use.
  • Cool white (4000K): Brighter and more visible for safety-focused walkway lighting.
  • Colored accents: Use holiday colors during the season or set a subtle blue for a moonlight garden effect.

Step 7: Set Up Automations

Pathway lights are perfect for automation since you always want them on at certain times. Configure these routines in the Hue app:

  • Sunset to sunrise: Automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn.
  • Late-night dimming: Reduce brightness to 20% after midnight to save energy while still marking the path.
  • Motion-triggered: Pair with a Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor to brighten the pathway when someone approaches.

Tips

  • The Calla is rated IP65 for full weather resistance against rain, snow, and garden sprinklers.
  • The light produces approximately 600 lumens with a 360-degree illumination pattern, making it visible from all directions.
  • Multiple Calla lights can be daisy-chained together, connecting from one to the next and sharing the same power supply. Check the PSU's capacity for the maximum number of connected lights.
  • If your soil is sandy or loose, consider placing a small amount of gravel around the stake for extra stability.
  • The low-voltage power supply makes this a safe DIY installation. No electrician is needed.
