What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Econic Outdoor Pedestal Light
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • An outdoor-rated electrical cable routed to the installation location
  • Basic tools: screwdriver, wrench, level
  • A concrete pad, paving stone, or firm surface for the base
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • An electrician (recommended for running the electrical supply)

Important Safety Note

The Hue Econic Pedestal is a hardwired outdoor fixture that connects to mains voltage. Running outdoor electrical cable and connecting the fixture requires knowledge of electrical codes and safety practices. If you are not comfortable working with mains wiring, hire a licensed electrician for the installation. Always turn off the circuit breaker before handling wires.

Step 1: Prepare the Installation Location

The Econic Pedestal is a freestanding post light designed for driveways, garden borders, and pathways. Choose a location with a solid base such as a concrete pad, paving stone, or compacted gravel. The pedestal must sit on a stable, level surface to stand straight. Verify that an electrical supply cable can be routed to this location from your home's electrical panel, either underground in conduit or along an existing outdoor circuit.

Step 2: Route Electrical Supply

If an electrical supply does not already exist at the installation location, an electrician will need to run a cable from your electrical panel or an existing outdoor junction box. The cable should be installed in appropriate outdoor-rated conduit and buried at the depth required by local electrical codes (typically 12 to 18 inches for low-voltage conduit).

Step 3: Turn Off Power

Switch off the circuit breaker that controls the outdoor circuit. Use a voltage tester to confirm no power is present at the supply cable.

Step 4: Assemble and Mount the Pedestal

  1. Assemble the pedestal light according to the included instructions, attaching the post sections and the light head.
  2. Position the pedestal on the prepared surface, feeding the supply cable up through the base.
  3. Secure the base to the mounting surface using the provided hardware and anchors.
  4. Use a level to confirm the pedestal stands straight.

Step 5: Connect the Wiring

  1. Inside the base of the pedestal, connect the supply wires to the fixture wires using the provided connectors or wire nuts.
  2. Match hot to hot, neutral to neutral, and ground to ground.
  3. Tuck the connections neatly inside the base compartment and close the access cover.

Step 6: Restore Power and Test

Turn the circuit breaker back on. The Econic should illuminate with a warm white light. Its modern design features a clear diffuser panel that provides an even, attractive light distribution visible from all sides. If the light does not turn on, switch off the breaker and recheck the wiring connections.

Step 7: Pair with Your Hue Bridge

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light.
  3. The Econic Pedestal will appear. Tap to pair it.
  4. Assign it to an outdoor room like "Driveway" or "Front Garden."

Step 8: Configure Colors and Automations

The Econic supports the full White and Color Ambiance range. Set up practical automations in the Hue app:

  • Dusk to dawn: Turn on at sunset with warm white and off at sunrise.
  • Motion activation: Pair with a Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor to brighten when someone approaches the driveway.
  • Welcome home: Use geofencing to turn on the pedestal light as you approach your home.
  • Seasonal colors: Change colors for holidays or special occasions.

Tips

  • The Econic Pedestal is rated IP44 for outdoor use, protecting it from splashing water.
  • The fixture produces approximately 1150 lumens, providing strong visibility for driveways and pathways.
  • Because this is a hardwired fixture, it receives constant power. Leave the breaker on and control the light exclusively through the Hue app and automations.
  • The modern angular design of the Econic works best with contemporary architecture. For traditional homes, consider the Hue Calla pathway light instead.
  • Ensure there is at least one other Hue device between the Bridge and the Econic to maintain a strong Zigbee mesh connection.
