What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Smart Button
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- The included mounting plate and adhesive strip
- At least one Hue light already set up and assigned to a room
Step 1: Unbox and Prepare the Smart Button
The Hue Smart Button comes with the button itself, a magnetic mounting plate, an adhesive strip, and a CR2032 coin cell battery (pre-installed). The button is a single-press device with a minimalist round design. It communicates with the Hue Bridge over Zigbee, so the Bridge must be within range for it to function.
Step 2: Add the Smart Button to Your Bridge
- Open the Philips Hue app.
- Go to Settings, then Accessories.
- Tap Add Accessory and select Hue Smart Button.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to press and hold the button on the device for about 3 seconds until the LED on the front blinks.
- The app will discover the button and pair it with the Bridge.
Step 3: Configure the Button Action
After pairing, the app will ask you to configure what the button does. You can assign it to control a specific room or specific lights. The Smart Button supports the following actions:
- Short press: Toggles the assigned lights on or off. When turning on, it uses the last scene or brightness you set.
- Long press: Dims or brightens the lights. Press and hold to dim; release and press and hold again to brighten. It cycles between dimming and brightening with each long press.
You can also assign a specific scene to the button so that pressing it always activates a particular lighting setup, such as "Relax" or "Energize."
Step 4: Choose a Mounting Location
Decide where you want to place the Smart Button. Common locations include:
- Next to a doorway where you would normally expect a light switch
- On a bedside table for nighttime light control
- Near the front door to turn on hallway or porch lights
- On a desk for quick control of office lighting
Step 5: Mount the Button
- Clean the mounting surface with a damp cloth and let it dry.
- Peel the adhesive backing off the mounting plate.
- Press the plate firmly onto the wall or surface. Hold for 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
- Snap the Smart Button onto the magnetic mounting plate. The magnet holds it securely but allows easy removal for battery replacement.
Alternatively, you can skip the mounting plate entirely and simply place the button on a shelf, table, or nightstand where it is easy to reach.
Step 6: Test the Button
- Press the button once. The assigned lights should turn on with the configured scene.
- Press again. The lights should turn off.
- Press and hold. The lights should dim gradually.
- Release, then press and hold again. The lights should brighten.
Tips
- The Smart Button uses a CR2032 coin cell battery that typically lasts about 3 years under normal use. When the battery is low, the Hue app will notify you.
- You can reconfigure the button's action at any time in the Hue app under Settings and then Accessories.
- The magnetic mount means you can easily take the button off the wall and carry it to the couch or bed as a portable remote.
- If the button is not responding, check that it is within Zigbee range of the Bridge or another Hue device. Move it closer to a Hue bulb to improve connectivity.
- The Smart Button counts toward the 12-accessory limit on the Hue Bridge, separate from the 50-light limit.
