What You Will Need

  • Ring Smart Lighting Bridge
  • Ring app (iOS or Android) with an active account
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network
  • A power outlet near your WiFi router (within about 30 feet for best results)

Understanding the Smart Lighting Bridge

The Ring Smart Lighting Bridge is a small plug-in device that acts as the central hub for all Ring Smart Lighting products. It connects to your home WiFi network and communicates with Ring Smart Lighting devices (pathlights, spotlights, steplights, and floodlights) using a proprietary low-power wireless protocol. Without the Bridge, your Smart Lighting devices will still function with basic motion-activated features but cannot be controlled through the Ring app or linked to other Ring devices.

Step 1: Plug In the Bridge

  1. Choose an outlet that is centrally located relative to where your outdoor Smart Lighting devices will be installed. The Bridge communicates wirelessly with your lights and has a range of approximately 150 feet in open air, though walls and building materials reduce this distance.
  2. Plug the Bridge into the outlet. The LED light on the front will begin flashing, indicating it is powered on and ready for setup.

Step 2: Add the Bridge in the Ring App

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Select Smart Lighting, then choose Smart Lighting Bridge.
  3. Scan the QR code on the bottom or side of the Bridge, or enter the code manually when prompted.
  4. The app will prompt you to confirm the LED on the Bridge is flashing. Tap Continue.
  5. Select your 2.4 GHz WiFi network from the list and enter your password. The Bridge does not support 5 GHz networks.
  6. Wait for the connection to complete. The LED on the Bridge will turn solid when it is successfully connected.
  7. Name the Bridge and assign it to a location.

Step 3: Verify the Connection

  1. In the Ring app, navigate to Devices and select the Smart Lighting Bridge.
  2. Confirm the device status shows as Online.
  3. Check the WiFi signal strength. If the signal is weak, consider moving the Bridge to an outlet closer to your router or using a WiFi extender.

Step 4: Add Smart Lighting Devices

With the Bridge online, you can now add Ring Smart Lighting devices:

  1. In the Ring app, tap Set Up a Device and select Smart Lighting.
  2. Choose the specific lighting device you want to add (pathlight, spotlight, steplight, or floodlight).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. The Bridge will automatically discover nearby Smart Lighting devices that are powered on.
  4. Each device can be named and assigned to a group for coordinated control.

Step 5: Configure Linking and Groups

The Bridge unlocks the following smart features for your lighting:

  • Device Linking — Link Smart Lighting devices with Ring cameras so that lights turn on when a camera detects motion. This creates an integrated security perimeter.
  • Light Groups — Group multiple lights together so they all activate when any one device in the group detects motion.
  • Schedules and Timers — Set lights to turn on at dusk and off at dawn, or create custom schedules.
  • App Control — Turn lights on and off manually through the Ring app from anywhere.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Place the Bridge on an interior wall outlet closest to the exterior where your outdoor lights are installed.
  • One Bridge supports up to 50 Smart Lighting devices.
  • If lights at the far end of your property are unresponsive, consider adding a second Bridge on a different side of your home.
  • The Bridge requires a constant power supply. If it loses power, your Smart Lighting devices will continue to work in standalone mode with basic motion activation but will not be app-controllable until the Bridge reconnects.
