What's in the Box

The TP-Link Kasa Smart WiFi Dimmer Switch HS220 package includes the dimmer switch unit, a faceplate (wall plate), wire nuts, and an installation guide. The HS220 is a single-pole dimmer switch designed to replace a standard wall switch. It requires a neutral wire for operation, which is an important detail to verify before purchasing. No hub is needed — the switch connects directly to your home WiFi network.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, confirm the following:

  • A neutral wire is present in your switch box (typically a white wire bundled with other wires)
  • The existing switch controls a dimmable light fixture with dimmable bulbs — LED bulbs must be rated as dimmable
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network is available (the HS220 does not support 5 GHz)
  • The Kasa Smart app is installed on your smartphone
  • You have a Phillips-head screwdriver and a voltage tester
  • You are comfortable working with household electrical wiring, or have an electrician available

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the power to the switch at the circuit breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no electricity flowing to the switch box before touching any wires.
  2. Remove the existing switch by unscrewing the faceplate and the switch mounting screws, then disconnect the wires from the old switch. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting to use as a reference.
  3. Identify the wires in your switch box: line (power from breaker, usually black), load (goes to the light fixture, also usually black), neutral (white, often bundled together with a wire nut), and ground (green or bare copper).
  4. Connect the HS220 wires: attach the black wire from the switch to the line wire, the red wire to the load wire, the white wire to the neutral bundle, and the green wire to the ground. Secure each connection with the included wire nuts.
  5. Carefully tuck the wires and switch into the electrical box. Screw the switch into place using the mounting screws, then attach the included faceplate.
  6. Restore power at the circuit breaker. The HS220's LED indicator should light up, confirming it has power.

App Pairing and Configuration

Open the Kasa Smart app and tap the "+" icon to add a new device. Select "Smart Switches" and choose the HS220. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the dimmer to your WiFi network. Once paired, you can control dimming from the app using a slider from 1 to 100 percent. Set a minimum brightness level if your bulbs flicker at very low levels. Create schedules to automate the lights, such as dimming to 20 percent at 9 PM and turning off at 11 PM. The gentle fade-on and fade-off transitions give the switch a polished feel.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The HS220 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. After linking your Kasa account, you can say "Alexa, dim the kitchen lights to 50 percent" or "Hey Google, brighten the dining room." The physical switch also retains smart functionality — pressing the dimmer button once turns the light on or off, while pressing and holding adjusts the brightness up or down. This makes the switch usable by anyone in the household, even those who do not use the app.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the switch does not power on after installation, verify the circuit breaker is on and that the neutral wire is properly connected. Flickering lights typically indicate that the bulbs are not dimmable-rated or that the minimum brightness needs adjustment in the Kasa app. If the switch will not connect to WiFi, press and hold the reset button on the side of the switch for 5 seconds to restore factory settings and retry the setup process.
