What You Will Need
- Ring Video Doorbell
- Smartphone with the Ring app installed
- Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz recommended for best range)
- Screwdriver (included in kit)
- Drill with masonry bit (for brick/stucco installations)
- Optional: Ring Chime or Chime Pro for indoor alerts
Step 1: Download the Ring App
- Download the Ring app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)
- Create a Ring account or sign in to your existing account
- Tap "Set Up a Device" and select "Doorbells"
- Scan the QR code on the back of your doorbell or on the quick start guide
Step 2: Charge Your Doorbell (Battery Version)
If you have the battery-powered version:
- Connect the included USB cable to the charging port
- Charge until the light turns solid green (2-4 hours for full charge)
- A full charge typically lasts 6-12 months depending on activity
Step 3: Choose Your Mounting Location
For the best experience:
- Mount at about 4 feet (48 inches) from the ground
- Ensure the doorbell has a clear view of the approach area
- Avoid direct sunlight on the lens to prevent glare
- Make sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong at this location
Step 4: Install the Mounting Bracket
- Hold the mounting bracket against the wall
- Use the level tool in the Ring app to ensure it is straight
- Mark the screw holes with a pencil
- For wood/siding: Drill pilot holes and drive the screws directly
- For brick/stucco: Use the included masonry bit to drill holes, insert anchors, then drive screws
Step 5: Connect to Your Existing Doorbell Wiring (Optional)
If you want to use your existing doorbell chime:
- Turn off power to your doorbell at the breaker
- Remove your old doorbell
- Connect the two wires to the screws on the back of the Ring (polarity does not matter)
- Turn the power back on
Note: This also keeps your Ring charged continuously.
Step 6: Attach the Doorbell
- Slide the Ring doorbell onto the mounting bracket from the top
- Push down until it clicks into place
- Insert the security screw at the bottom using the included screwdriver
Step 7: Complete Setup in the App
- The Ring app will guide you through connecting to your Wi-Fi network
- Press the orange button on the Ring to put it in setup mode
- Connect your phone to the Ring setup network when prompted
- Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password
- Wait for the doorbell to connect (the light will spin blue, then turn off)
Step 8: Configure Motion Settings
Fine-tune your Ring doorbell:
- Motion Zones: Draw custom zones to monitor specific areas
- Motion Sensitivity: Adjust to reduce false alerts from cars or trees
- Motion Schedule: Set times when you want motion alerts disabled
- Smart Alerts: Enable to only get alerts for people (requires Ring Protect)
Step 9: Connect to Voice Assistants
- Amazon Alexa: Ring is an Amazon company, so integration is smooth. Enable the Ring skill and see your doorbell on Echo Show devices
- Google Home: Works through the Ring skill - you can view video on Nest displays
Troubleshooting
- Poor video quality: Check your Wi-Fi signal strength in the Ring app under Device Health
- Not connecting to Wi-Fi: Ensure you are using 2.4GHz network, not 5GHz
- Battery draining fast: Reduce motion sensitivity or motion zones to decrease recordings
- Existing chime not working: You may need a Ring Chime Pro or check your transformer voltage
