Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi or network connectivity issues preventing the Echo Hub from reaching the cloud
  • Smart home devices are offline or have lost their connection to the hub
  • Thread or Matter devices not pairing correctly with the Echo Hub's built-in border router
  • The Echo Hub firmware is outdated
  • Power interruption (especially for hardwired installations)
  • The paired speaker is disconnected, so the Hub cannot provide audible Alexa responses

Step 1: Check the Echo Hub's Connection Status

  1. Look at the Echo Hub display. If it shows the home dashboard with device tiles, it is powered on and running.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen and check the Wi-Fi icon. If it shows no connection, the Hub cannot communicate with cloud-based services or control Wi-Fi smart home devices.
  3. Go to Settings > Network and verify the Hub is connected to your Wi-Fi network. If it is disconnected, select your network and re-enter the password.
  4. Test the connection by asking the Hub to perform a cloud-dependent task like checking the weather.

Step 2: Restart the Echo Hub

  1. If the Echo Hub is powered by its surface-mount adapter, unplug it from the wall outlet, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
  2. If the Echo Hub is hardwired to a junction box, go to your circuit breaker panel and toggle the breaker for that circuit off, wait 30 seconds, then toggle it back on.
  3. Wait for the device to fully restart and display the home dashboard. This typically takes 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. After restarting, check if your smart home device tiles show their correct status (online vs. offline).

Step 3: Troubleshoot Individual Smart Home Devices

  1. If the Echo Hub is online but specific devices are not responding, the issue is likely with those individual devices rather than the Hub.
  2. Open the Alexa app and go to Devices. Check which devices show as Offline.
  3. For offline Wi-Fi devices (smart plugs, bulbs, cameras), restart the device by power cycling it. Then open the Alexa app and pull down on the Devices page to refresh.
  4. For Thread devices, ensure they are within range of the Echo Hub. Thread devices form a mesh network, so adding more Thread devices can extend coverage.
  5. For Matter devices, verify they were paired correctly. If a device is unresponsive, remove it from the Alexa app and re-pair it.

Step 4: Fix the Paired Speaker

The Echo Hub does not have a built-in speaker, so it relies on a paired Echo speaker for audible responses.

  1. Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Echo Hub > Settings > Paired Speaker.
  2. If no speaker is paired, tap Pair a Speaker and select a nearby Echo device.
  3. If a speaker is already paired but Alexa is not responding audibly, check that the paired speaker is plugged in and online.
  4. Restart the paired speaker by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

Step 5: Re-Discover Devices

  1. If devices were previously working but are no longer controllable, say "Alexa, discover devices" or go to the Alexa app and tap Devices > + > Add Device.
  2. The Echo Hub will scan for nearby Thread, Matter, and Wi-Fi smart home devices.
  3. For Zigbee devices, remember that the Echo Hub does not include a Zigbee radio. These devices need a separate Zigbee hub or bridge.

Step 6: Update the Echo Hub Software

  1. Swipe down on the Echo Hub screen and go to Settings > Device Options > Check for Software Updates.
  2. Install any available updates. The device will restart after updating.
  3. Software updates often include improved compatibility with Matter and Thread devices.

Step 7: Reset a Specific Device Tile

  1. If a device tile on the dashboard is not reflecting the correct state (for example, showing a light as "on" when it is actually off), remove the tile and re-add it.
  2. Long-press the home screen, tap the X on the affected tile, then tap Manage Dashboard to add it back.
  3. This forces the Hub to re-fetch the device's current state.

Step 8: Factory Reset the Echo Hub

  1. If the Hub is consistently unresponsive or unable to control any devices, perform a factory reset.
  2. Go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults.
  3. After the reset, you will need to set it up again, re-pair a speaker, and re-add your smart home devices to the dashboard.

When to Contact Support

If the Echo Hub display does not power on after verifying the power source, or if the touchscreen is persistently unresponsive after a factory reset, contact Amazon Customer Support. For hardwired installations, consider having an electrician verify the wiring if the Hub is not receiving power.
