Common Causes
- The microphone is muted (microphone off button pressed)
- Background noise or obstructions blocking the microphone array
- Wi-Fi connectivity issues preventing Alexa from processing commands
- The wake word setting was changed from "Alexa" to something else
- Software glitch or outdated firmware
- Do Not Disturb mode is enabled
Step 1: Check the Microphone Status
- Look at the indicator bar at the bottom of the Echo Show 5 screen. If it is red, the microphone is turned off.
- Press the microphone off button on top of the device to re-enable the microphones. The red bar will disappear.
- Try saying "Alexa" again. If the blue bar appears at the bottom of the screen, the device is listening and the microphones are working.
Step 2: Reduce Background Noise
- If the Echo is near a TV, stereo system, running appliance, or fan, the background noise may prevent it from hearing the wake word.
- Move the Echo Show 5 at least 3 feet away from sources of constant noise.
- Test by standing within 5 feet of the device and speaking clearly at a normal volume. Say "Alexa, what time is it?"
- If the device responds at close range but not from across the room, the issue is likely environmental noise rather than a device problem.
Step 3: Verify Wi-Fi Connection
- Swipe down from the top of the Echo Show 5 screen and check the Wi-Fi icon. If it shows no connection or a weak signal, the device cannot reach Alexa's servers to process your commands.
- Tap Settings > Network to view your current connection status and signal strength.
- If disconnected, select your Wi-Fi network and re-enter the password.
- Test your internet by asking "Alexa, what's the weather?" A valid response confirms the connection is working.
Step 4: Verify the Wake Word
- Open the Alexa app on your phone and go to Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Select your Echo Show 5 and tap Settings (gear icon).
- Scroll to Wake Word and check which word is set. Options include "Alexa," "Amazon," "Echo," and "Computer."
- If someone changed the wake word, switch it back to your preferred option or try using the currently set word.
Step 5: Check Do Not Disturb
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and look for the Do Not Disturb icon (a circle with a line through it). If enabled, the device may not respond audibly to some requests.
- Tap the icon to disable Do Not Disturb.
- You can also check DND scheduling in the Alexa app under Devices > Echo Show 5 > Do Not Disturb.
Step 6: Restart the Echo Show 5
- Unplug the device from the power outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait for it to fully boot up (about 45 seconds to 1 minute).
- Once the home screen appears, test by saying "Alexa, hello."
Step 7: Check for Software Updates
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings > Device Options > Check for Software Updates.
- If an update is available, the device will download and install it. This may take several minutes and the device may restart.
- After updating, test the voice commands again.
Step 8: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you can factory reset the device.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Confirm the reset. The device will erase all settings and return to the out-of-box state.
- Set up the Echo Show 5 again from scratch using the on-screen wizard.
When to Contact Support
If the Echo Show 5 still does not respond to voice commands after a factory reset and fresh setup, the microphone hardware may be defective. Contact Amazon Customer Support for further assistance or a replacement.
