Common Causes

  • The microphone is muted (microphone off button has been pressed)
  • Wi-Fi network is down or the Echo Pop has lost its connection
  • The device is too far from the Wi-Fi router
  • A software glitch or failed firmware update
  • The USB-C power adapter is not providing sufficient power
  • The wake word has been changed from "Alexa"
  • Background noise is preventing the microphone from detecting the wake word

Step 1: Check the Power Supply

  1. Verify that the Echo Pop is plugged in and the USB-C power cable is fully seated in the port on the back of the device.
  2. Check that the LED light bar on the front responds when you say "Alexa." If there is no light activity at all, the device may not be receiving power.
  3. Try a different wall outlet to rule out a dead outlet.
  4. Use only the included power adapter. Third-party USB-C chargers may not provide the required wattage, causing the Echo Pop to behave erratically or not power on.

Step 2: Check the Microphone

  1. Look at the LED light bar on the front of the Echo Pop. If it is solid red, the microphone is muted.
  2. Press the microphone off button on top of the device to unmute. The red light should turn off.
  3. Say "Alexa" and watch for the blue light animation, which confirms the device is listening.

Step 3: Reduce Background Noise

  1. The Echo Pop has a compact design with fewer microphones than larger Echo devices, which can make it more sensitive to background noise.
  2. Move the Echo Pop away from TVs, fans, open windows, and other sources of constant noise.
  3. Test at close range, within 3 feet, speaking clearly at a normal volume.
  4. If the device responds at close range but not from across the room, reposition it to a more central, quieter location.

Step 4: Verify Wi-Fi Connection

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone and go to Devices > Echo & Alexa.
  2. Find your Echo Pop and check if it shows as Online or Offline.
  3. If offline, the device has lost its Wi-Fi connection. Restart both the Echo Pop and your router.
  4. To restart the Echo Pop, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
  5. To restart the router, unplug it for 60 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for it to fully boot.
  6. If the Echo Pop still cannot connect, move it closer to the router and try again.

Step 5: Reconnect to Wi-Fi

  1. In the Alexa app, tap on your Echo Pop and go to Settings > Wi-Fi Network.
  2. Tap Change to select a new network or re-enter the password for your current network.
  3. Make sure you are connecting to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. If one band is not working, try the other.
  4. After connecting, ask "Alexa, what time is it?" to verify the connection is working.

Step 6: Check the Wake Word

  1. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Pop > Settings > Wake Word.
  2. Verify the wake word is set to what you expect. If it was changed to "Echo," "Amazon," or "Computer," you will need to use that word instead of "Alexa."
  3. Change it back to your preferred wake word if needed.

Step 7: Check for Software Updates

  1. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Pop > Settings > Device Software Version.
  2. The Echo Pop updates automatically when connected to Wi-Fi. If you suspect it is running old software, restart the device while connected to Wi-Fi and it will check for updates.
  3. Updates can take up to 15 minutes to download and install.

Step 8: Factory Reset

  1. If none of the above steps resolve the issue, factory reset the Echo Pop.
  2. Press and hold the Action button (the round button on top) for 20 seconds.
  3. The light ring will flash orange, indicating the device is resetting to factory defaults.
  4. Set up the Echo Pop again through the Alexa app as if it were a new device.

When to Contact Support

If the Echo Pop does not power on at all (no LED activity even with a known-good adapter and outlet), or if the device cannot respond to voice commands after a factory reset and fresh setup, the hardware may be defective. Contact Amazon Customer Support for a replacement.
