Common Causes
- The microphone is muted (microphone off button has been pressed)
- Wi-Fi network is down or the Echo Pop has lost its connection
- The device is too far from the Wi-Fi router
- A software glitch or failed firmware update
- The USB-C power adapter is not providing sufficient power
- The wake word has been changed from "Alexa"
- Background noise is preventing the microphone from detecting the wake word
Step 1: Check the Power Supply
- Verify that the Echo Pop is plugged in and the USB-C power cable is fully seated in the port on the back of the device.
- Check that the LED light bar on the front responds when you say "Alexa." If there is no light activity at all, the device may not be receiving power.
- Try a different wall outlet to rule out a dead outlet.
- Use only the included power adapter. Third-party USB-C chargers may not provide the required wattage, causing the Echo Pop to behave erratically or not power on.
Step 2: Check the Microphone
- Look at the LED light bar on the front of the Echo Pop. If it is solid red, the microphone is muted.
- Press the microphone off button on top of the device to unmute. The red light should turn off.
- Say "Alexa" and watch for the blue light animation, which confirms the device is listening.
Step 3: Reduce Background Noise
- The Echo Pop has a compact design with fewer microphones than larger Echo devices, which can make it more sensitive to background noise.
- Move the Echo Pop away from TVs, fans, open windows, and other sources of constant noise.
- Test at close range, within 3 feet, speaking clearly at a normal volume.
- If the device responds at close range but not from across the room, reposition it to a more central, quieter location.
Step 4: Verify Wi-Fi Connection
- Open the Alexa app on your phone and go to Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Find your Echo Pop and check if it shows as Online or Offline.
- If offline, the device has lost its Wi-Fi connection. Restart both the Echo Pop and your router.
- To restart the Echo Pop, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
- To restart the router, unplug it for 60 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for it to fully boot.
- If the Echo Pop still cannot connect, move it closer to the router and try again.
Step 5: Reconnect to Wi-Fi
- In the Alexa app, tap on your Echo Pop and go to Settings > Wi-Fi Network.
- Tap Change to select a new network or re-enter the password for your current network.
- Make sure you are connecting to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. If one band is not working, try the other.
- After connecting, ask "Alexa, what time is it?" to verify the connection is working.
Step 6: Check the Wake Word
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Pop > Settings > Wake Word.
- Verify the wake word is set to what you expect. If it was changed to "Echo," "Amazon," or "Computer," you will need to use that word instead of "Alexa."
- Change it back to your preferred wake word if needed.
Step 7: Check for Software Updates
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Pop > Settings > Device Software Version.
- The Echo Pop updates automatically when connected to Wi-Fi. If you suspect it is running old software, restart the device while connected to Wi-Fi and it will check for updates.
- Updates can take up to 15 minutes to download and install.
Step 8: Factory Reset
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, factory reset the Echo Pop.
- Press and hold the Action button (the round button on top) for 20 seconds.
- The light ring will flash orange, indicating the device is resetting to factory defaults.
- Set up the Echo Pop again through the Alexa app as if it were a new device.
When to Contact Support
If the Echo Pop does not power on at all (no LED activity even with a known-good adapter and outlet), or if the device cannot respond to voice commands after a factory reset and fresh setup, the hardware may be defective. Contact Amazon Customer Support for a replacement.
