Common Causes
- The Fire TV Cube is frozen or experiencing a software glitch
- HDMI connection is loose or the cable is faulty
- Wi-Fi connection dropped, preventing streaming
- The power adapter is not providing sufficient power
- The Alexa Voice Remote has lost its Bluetooth pairing
- The TV is set to the wrong HDMI input
- Overheating is causing the device to throttle or shut down
- A streaming app has crashed or needs an update
Step 1: Check HDMI and Power Connections
- Verify the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the Fire TV Cube and your TV. Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and reconnect firmly.
- Try a different HDMI port on your TV. Some HDMI ports support different standards, and the Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) works best with an HDMI 2.1 port for full 4K HDR support.
- Try a different HDMI cable to rule out a damaged cable. Use a high-speed HDMI cable rated for 4K.
- Ensure the power adapter is plugged into a wall outlet, not a power strip that may have been switched off. The Fire TV Cube needs its included power adapter and cannot be powered via USB.
Step 2: Check the TV Input
- Use your TV remote to cycle through HDMI inputs and confirm you are on the correct one.
- If your TV supports HDMI-CEC, the Fire TV Cube should automatically switch your TV to the correct input when it turns on. If this is not happening, enable CEC in your TV's settings (often labeled "Anynet+", "Bravia Sync", "SimpLink", or "VIERA Link" depending on the TV brand).
- Say "Alexa, turn on the TV" to test if the Fire TV Cube can control your TV. If the Cube responds but the TV does not switch inputs, reconfigure TV controls in Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment.
Step 3: Restart the Fire TV Cube
- The quickest restart method: press and hold the Select button and the Play/Pause button on the remote simultaneously for 5 seconds. The device will restart.
- Alternatively, say "Alexa, restart" to trigger a restart via voice.
- If the device is completely frozen and does not respond to the remote or voice, unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Wait about 1 minute for the Fire TV Cube to fully boot and display the home screen.
Step 4: Fix Remote Pairing Issues
- If the remote is unresponsive, replace the batteries with fresh AAA batteries.
- To re-pair the remote, press and hold the Home button for 10 seconds. The remote's LED will flash, indicating it is in pairing mode.
- If you have a phone available, use the Fire TV app (available on iOS and Android) as a temporary remote to navigate settings and troubleshoot the physical remote.
Step 5: Check Wi-Fi and Streaming
- If the Fire TV Cube is on but streaming content buffers or does not load, check the Wi-Fi connection. Go to Settings > Network and verify the connection status and signal strength.
- Run the built-in network test by selecting your connected network and choosing Check Connection. The test will confirm if the Cube can reach the internet.
- For the most reliable 4K streaming, use the built-in Ethernet port with a wired connection to your router.
- If Wi-Fi is weak, move the Fire TV Cube closer to the router or add a mesh Wi-Fi node near your entertainment center.
Step 6: Fix App-Specific Issues
- If only one streaming app is not working, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the problem app and choose Clear Cache. If that does not help, tap Clear Data (you will need to sign in again).
- If the app is still not working, uninstall and reinstall it from the Amazon Appstore.
- Check if the app has a pending update. Go to the Appstore and look for available updates.
Step 7: Check for Overheating
- The Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) generates heat during extended use. Feel the top and sides of the device. If it is very hot, it may be throttling performance.
- Ensure the Cube has adequate ventilation. Do not place it inside an enclosed cabinet or stack other devices on top of it.
- If overheating is a recurring issue, leave more space around the device or place a small USB fan nearby.
Step 8: Factory Reset
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Confirm the reset. All apps, accounts, and settings will be erased.
- After the reset, set up the Fire TV Cube from scratch, sign in to your Amazon account, and reinstall your streaming apps.
When to Contact Support
If the Fire TV Cube does not power on at all (no lights, no fan noise), the power adapter or the device itself may be defective. If video output is distorted or shows artifacts even with a confirmed working HDMI cable and TV, contact Amazon Customer Support for warranty assistance.
