Common Causes
When your Apple HomePod (2nd Gen) stops responding to "Hey Siri," there are several potential causes. Understanding these will help you diagnose and fix the issue quickly.
- Microphone disabled — The "Listen for Hey Siri" setting may be turned off in the Home app, or the microphone may have been manually muted.
- Network connectivity issues — Siri requires an active internet connection to process voice commands. If your Wi-Fi network is down or unstable, Siri will not respond.
- Software bug or outdated firmware — An outdated HomePod software version may contain bugs affecting Siri recognition.
- Background noise or placement — If the HomePod is placed near constant noise sources like fans, running water, or a TV, Siri may have difficulty detecting the wake word.
- Apple ID or iCloud issues — Siri relies on your Apple ID for personalized responses. Authentication problems can interfere with Siri functionality.
Step 1: Check Microphone and Siri Settings
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Press and hold the HomePod tile to open its controls.
- Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner to open settings.
- Scroll down and verify that Listen for "Hey Siri" is toggled on.
- Also check that Touch and Hold for Siri is enabled as a backup activation method.
Step 2: Test the Microphone
- Look at the top of the HomePod. If you see an orange or red light when you try to speak to Siri, the microphone may be muted.
- Tap and hold the top of the HomePod to manually activate Siri. If Siri responds to a touch command but not to "Hey Siri," the issue is with voice detection specifically.
- Try speaking to the HomePod from different distances and angles to determine if placement or background noise is the issue.
Step 3: Check Your Network Connection
- Open the Home app, press and hold the HomePod tile, and tap the gear icon.
- Scroll down to the Wi-Fi Address section and confirm the HomePod is connected to your network.
- Test your internet connection by asking another device on the same network to load a webpage.
- If the network is down, restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Wait two minutes for it to fully restart, then check if the HomePod reconnects.
Step 4: Restart the HomePod
- Open the Home app, press and hold the HomePod tile, and tap the gear icon.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod.
- Alternatively, unplug the HomePod from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Wait for the HomePod to fully boot (the spinning white light will stop and Siri will chime). Then test "Hey Siri" again.
Step 5: Update HomePod Software
- Open the Home app and tap Home Settings.
- Tap Software Update to check for available updates.
- If an update is available, install it and wait for the HomePod to restart.
- After the update completes, test "Hey Siri" to see if the issue is resolved.
Step 6: Reset and Re-setup
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, a factory reset may be necessary.
- Open the Home app, press and hold the HomePod tile, tap the gear icon, scroll down, and select Reset HomePod.
- Choose Remove Accessory to factory reset the device.
- After the reset, set up the HomePod again by holding your iPhone near it and following the on-screen prompts.
- If the problem persists after a full reset, contact Apple Support for hardware diagnosis.
