Common Causes
- Battery is low or depleted
- Sensitivity is set too low or the sensor is not calibrated for its mounting surface
- The sensor is out of Zigbee range from the hub
- The sensor has lost its pairing with the hub
- The vibration or tilt threshold is too high for the type of activity you want to detect
- The sensor is mounted on a surface that does not transmit vibrations well
Fix 1: Replace the Battery
- The Aqara Vibration Sensor uses a CR2032 coin cell battery.
- Open the battery cover on the back of the sensor by twisting it with a coin.
- Replace the battery with a fresh CR2032, ensuring the positive (+) side faces up.
- Close the cover. The LED should blink once when the battery is inserted.
- Tap the sensor firmly to test vibration detection. The LED should blink with each tap, and the status should update in the Aqara Home app.
Fix 2: Verify Sensor Placement
The Aqara Vibration Sensor detects three types of events: vibration, tilt, and drop. Where and how you mount it significantly affects detection reliability.
- For detecting door knocks, break-in attempts, or appliance vibration, mount the sensor directly on the surface using the included adhesive. The sensor must be in firm contact with the surface to detect vibrations transmitting through it.
- Avoid mounting the sensor on soft or padded surfaces (rubber mats, carpeted areas) as these absorb vibrations before they reach the sensor.
- For tilt detection (such as monitoring if a window is tilted open), mount the sensor flat on the moving part. The sensor detects changes in its angle relative to gravity.
- For drop detection (monitoring if a valuable item has been knocked off a shelf), attach the sensor to the object itself.
Fix 3: Adjust Detection Sensitivity
- Open the Aqara Home app and navigate to the Vibration Sensor's device page.
- Tap Settings and look for Sensitivity or Detection Threshold.
- The sensor typically offers three levels: Low, Medium, and High.
- High sensitivity detects subtle vibrations like footsteps on a wooden floor or light taps.
- Medium sensitivity is appropriate for door knocks and moderate impacts.
- Low sensitivity requires strong vibrations like heavy impacts or deliberate force.
- Set the sensitivity to match the type of activity you want to detect. If the sensor is not triggering, increase the sensitivity.
- After changing the sensitivity, test by reproducing the vibration you want to detect and checking if the app registers it.
Fix 4: Check the Hub Connection
- Open the Aqara Home app and verify your Aqara hub is online. The Vibration Sensor uses Zigbee and requires a hub.
- If the hub is offline, restart it by unplugging for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
- Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the hub and sensors to reconnect.
- If the sensor remains offline after the hub restarts, move it closer to the hub temporarily to test the connection.
Fix 5: Re-Pair the Sensor
- Remove the sensor from the app (device page > Settings > Remove Device).
- Press and hold the reset button on the sensor for 5 seconds with a pin until the LED flashes rapidly.
- In the app, tap + and add the sensor again. Keep it within 1 to 2 meters of the hub during pairing.
- Once paired, set the sensitivity level and recreate any automations.
Fix 6: Troubleshoot Light Sensor Issues
Some Aqara sensor models include a built-in light level sensor (lux sensor). If the light readings seem inaccurate or do not update:
- Make sure the sensor's light detection window is not covered or obstructed by mounting tape, labels, or dirt.
- The light sensor reports at intervals, not continuously. Wait for the next reporting cycle or press the button to force an update.
- Light values are approximate and intended for automations (like "turn on lights when it gets dark"), not precise measurements. Use them as thresholds rather than exact lux values.
- If the light reading is consistently zero, the light sensor window may be blocked. Reposition the sensor so the window has line of sight to the ambient light source.
Fix 7: Strengthen the Zigbee Mesh
- If the sensor works reliably close to the hub but drops out when placed at its intended location, add mains-powered Zigbee devices between the hub and sensor to extend the mesh.
- Good repeater options include Aqara Smart Plugs, wired Wall Switches, or other always-on Zigbee devices.
- Restart the hub after adding repeaters to rebuild the mesh routing.
When to Contact Support
If the sensor LED does not blink at all with a fresh battery and after a factory reset, the device hardware is likely faulty. Contact Aqara Support for warranty replacement.
