Common Causes

When your Arlo Video Doorbell is not ringing your existing chime or not connecting to the network, the problem usually comes from one of these areas:

  • Incompatible or underpowered doorbell transformer — the Arlo doorbell requires 16-24 VAC
  • Loose wiring connections at the doorbell or transformer
  • Mechanical chime incompatibility with the Arlo doorbell
  • WiFi signal too weak at the front door
  • Doorbell not paired to the Arlo app
  • Battery depleted (if using the wire-free configuration)
  • Firmware needs updating

Fixing Chime Issues

Step 1: Check Your Transformer Voltage

The Arlo Video Doorbell requires a transformer rated between 16 and 24 VAC. Many older homes have transformers rated at only 10 or 12 VAC, which is insufficient. Locate your doorbell transformer, usually near your electrical panel, in a utility closet, or in the attic. Check the label for the voltage rating. If it is below 16 VAC, you will need to replace it with a 16-24 VAC transformer, which can be found at most hardware stores for under twenty dollars.

Step 2: Inspect the Wiring

  1. Turn off the breaker controlling the doorbell circuit.
  2. Remove the Arlo doorbell from its mounting bracket.
  3. Check that both wires are securely connected to the terminal screws on the back of the doorbell.
  4. Inspect the wires for breaks, corrosion, or fraying.
  5. Tighten any loose connections and reattach the doorbell.
  6. Turn the breaker back on and test the doorbell button.

Step 3: Check Chime Compatibility

The Arlo Video Doorbell works with most mechanical and digital chimes, but some electronic chimes may not be compatible. If your chime does not ring when the doorbell button is pressed, try bypassing the chime by connecting the doorbell wires directly and using only the Arlo app notifications or a smart speaker announcement as your alert. You can also purchase a compatible plug-in chime as a replacement.

Step 4: Test with Battery Power

If you suspect the wiring is the issue, temporarily switch to battery power to determine if the doorbell functions correctly on its own. Charge the internal battery fully and disconnect the doorbell from the wiring. If the doorbell works on battery but not when wired, the problem is definitively in the wiring or transformer.

Fixing Connection Issues

Step 5: Check WiFi Signal at the Front Door

Front doors are often at the edge of WiFi range, especially if the router is in the back of the house. Use your smartphone to check signal strength at the doorbell's location. The Arlo doorbell needs a strong 2.4 GHz WiFi signal. If the signal is weak, consider:

  • Moving your router closer to the front of the house.
  • Adding a WiFi mesh node or range extender near the front door.
  • Removing sources of interference like thick metal doors or nearby electronics.

Step 6: Power Cycle the Doorbell

  1. If wired, turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  2. If battery-powered, press and hold the release button to remove the doorbell from the bracket, wait 30 seconds, and reattach it.
  3. Wait two to three minutes for the doorbell to reconnect to WiFi.
  4. Check the Arlo app for the connection status.

Step 7: Update Firmware

In the Arlo app, go to Settings then My Devices and select the doorbell. If a firmware update is available, install it. Firmware updates often fix chime compatibility issues and improve WiFi connectivity.

Step 8: Factory Reset and Re-pair

If the doorbell still will not connect, perform a factory reset.

  1. Press and hold the reset button on the doorbell (use a pin or paperclip for the recessed button) for about 15 seconds until the LED blinks amber.
  2. Remove the doorbell from your Arlo account in the app.
  3. Tap Add New Device and set up the doorbell from scratch.

When to Contact Support

If the doorbell button does not respond at all, meaning no LED feedback and no app notification, even with a full battery charge and confirmed power supply, the button mechanism or internal circuitry may be faulty. Contact Arlo Support for warranty assistance.
