Common Causes

When your Ecobee SmartSensor for Doors and Windows is not pairing with your thermostat or is reporting incorrect temperature readings, the issue typically relates to one of the following:

  • Battery tab not removed or battery depleted
  • Sensor out of range of the thermostat's radio signal
  • Bluetooth interference during the pairing process
  • Thermostat firmware outdated
  • Sensor placed in a location that skews temperature readings
  • Magnet misaligned with the sensor body
  • Maximum sensor limit reached on the thermostat

Fixing Pairing Issues

Step 1: Verify the Battery

The SmartSensor for Doors and Windows uses a CR2032 coin cell battery. If you just unboxed the sensor, make sure you have completely removed the plastic battery tab. If the sensor has been in use, the battery may be depleted. Pop open the sensor housing, remove the battery, and replace it with a fresh CR2032. After inserting the new battery, wait 30 seconds before attempting to pair.

Step 2: Move Closer to the Thermostat

The initial pairing process uses Bluetooth, which has a shorter range than the sensor's normal operating radio. During pairing, hold the sensor within 15 feet of both the ecobee thermostat and your smartphone. Once paired, the sensor communicates with the thermostat via the 915 MHz radio signal, which works at distances up to 45 feet.

Step 3: Restart the Pairing Process

  1. Open the ecobee app and navigate to Sensors.
  2. Tap Add Sensor.
  3. If the sensor does not appear after 30 seconds, remove the battery from the sensor, wait 10 seconds, and reinsert it.
  4. The sensor should now appear in the app. Tap it to pair.

Step 4: Reduce Bluetooth Interference

Bluetooth pairing can be disrupted by nearby wireless devices. During the pairing process, try the following:

  • Turn off other Bluetooth devices in the room temporarily.
  • Move away from WiFi routers, microwave ovens, and cordless phones, which can cause interference.
  • Close other Bluetooth-connected apps on your phone.

Step 5: Update Thermostat Firmware

An outdated thermostat firmware can cause pairing failures with newer sensors. On the thermostat, go to Main Menu, then Settings, then About to check the current firmware version. If an update is available, it will install automatically when the thermostat is connected to WiFi. You can also force a check by restarting the thermostat.

Step 6: Check Sensor Limits

Ecobee thermostats support up to 32 sensors. If you are at the limit, you will need to remove an existing sensor before adding a new one. In the ecobee app, go to Sensors, select a sensor you no longer need, and tap Remove.

Fixing Temperature Reporting Issues

Step 7: Check Sensor Placement

The door and window sensor includes a temperature sensor, but its primary purpose is detecting open and close events. Temperature accuracy can be affected by placement.

  • Sensors mounted on exterior doors or windows will be influenced by outside temperatures, especially in extreme weather.
  • Sensors in direct sunlight will report higher temperatures.
  • Sensors near heating vents or HVAC registers will read warmer than the actual room temperature.

If temperature accuracy is important, mount the sensor on the interior frame side rather than on the door or window itself, as the frame is less affected by outside temperature transfer.

Step 8: Verify Magnet Alignment

If the sensor is not correctly detecting open and close states, the magnet may be misaligned.

  1. Check that the magnet piece is within one-half inch of the sensor body when the door or window is closed.
  2. Make sure the magnet is aligned on the correct side of the sensor. The flat edge of the magnet should face the flat edge of the sensor.
  3. Open and close the door or window while watching the sensor status in the ecobee app to confirm it updates correctly.

Step 9: Re-pair the Sensor

If the sensor paired previously but has stopped reporting temperature or open/close status, remove it from your account and pair it again.

  1. In the ecobee app, go to Sensors and select the problematic sensor.
  2. Tap Remove Sensor.
  3. Remove the battery from the sensor, wait 10 seconds, and reinsert it.
  4. Tap Add Sensor and pair it as a new device.

When to Contact Support

If the sensor cannot be detected during pairing after a fresh battery and firmware update, it may have a hardware defect. Contact ecobee Support with your thermostat serial number and sensor details for warranty assistance.
