Common Causes

When your ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium shows as offline or will not connect to your WiFi network, the issue usually falls into one of these categories:

  • WiFi network outage or internet service disruption
  • WiFi password changed on your router without updating the thermostat
  • Router firmware update that changed network settings or bands
  • Thermostat firmware glitch requiring a restart
  • C-wire or Power Extender Kit (PEK) issue causing intermittent power loss
  • WiFi signal too weak at the thermostat location
  • Too many devices on the network exceeding the router's capacity

Step 1: Check the Thermostat Display

Look at the ecobee thermostat screen. If the display is completely blank, the issue is power-related, not WiFi. If the display is on but shows a WiFi disconnected icon (a WiFi symbol with a line through it), the thermostat has power but cannot reach the internet. This distinction helps narrow down the troubleshooting path.

Step 2: Verify Your Internet Connection

Check whether other devices in your home have internet access. If your internet service is down, the thermostat will appear offline in the ecobee app but will continue operating based on its programmed schedule. Once internet service resumes, the thermostat should automatically reconnect. Contact your ISP if the outage persists.

Step 3: Restart the Thermostat

  1. On the thermostat touchscreen, go to Main Menu.
  2. Tap Settings, then Reset.
  3. Select Restart. This preserves all your settings and schedules.
  4. Wait about two minutes for the thermostat to reboot.
  5. After it restarts, check whether the WiFi icon reappears on the display.

Step 4: Reconnect to WiFi

If the thermostat does not reconnect after a restart, you may need to re-enter your network credentials.

  1. On the thermostat, go to Main Menu, then Settings, then WiFi.
  2. Select your WiFi network from the available list.
  3. Enter your password carefully. Use the keyboard on the touchscreen, paying attention to capital letters and special characters.
  4. Tap Connect and wait for the confirmation.

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. If one band is not working, try the other.

Step 5: Restart Your Router

  1. Unplug your router from power.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and wait three minutes for it to fully boot.
  4. Check the thermostat to see if it reconnects.

If your router recently updated its firmware, it may have changed settings like band steering, channel selection, or security protocols that could prevent the thermostat from connecting. Log in to your router's admin panel and verify the settings have not changed.

Step 6: Check Power Supply

If the thermostat is intermittently losing power (display flickers or goes blank briefly), the issue may be with the C-wire or Power Extender Kit.

  • Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker.
  • Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.
  • Check that all wires are securely connected to the correct terminals.
  • If using a PEK, check the connections at the furnace control board as well. Loose wires at the PEK are a common cause of intermittent power loss.
  • Reattach the thermostat and restore power.

Step 7: Check for Firmware Updates

If the thermostat is connected to WiFi but behaving erratically, a firmware update may resolve the issue. The ecobee thermostat checks for updates automatically. You can verify the current version by going to Main Menu, then Settings, then About. If an update is pending, the thermostat will install it during a period of low activity.

Step 8: Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, you can factory reset the thermostat. Be aware that this erases all settings, schedules, and sensor pairings.

  1. Go to Main Menu, then Settings, then Reset.
  2. Select Reset All.
  3. Walk through the initial setup wizard again, including WiFi setup and HVAC configuration.
  4. Re-pair any SmartSensors after the reset is complete.

When to Contact Support

If the thermostat cannot detect any WiFi networks after a factory reset, the WiFi module may be defective. Contact ecobee Support with your thermostat serial number, found on the back of the unit or under Settings then About.
