When your Ecobee thermostat shows as offline in the app but still controls your HVAC locally, it is usually a WiFi or server connection issue. This guide explains how to get it back online.

Why Ecobee Goes Offline

  • WiFi connection dropped
  • Router changed or password updated
  • Ecobee servers experiencing issues
  • Thermostat needs a reboot
  • 5GHz network not supported

How to Fix an Offline Ecobee

Restart the Thermostat

  1. Pull the thermostat off the wall mount
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Put it back on the mount
  4. Wait 2-3 minutes for it to reconnect

Check WiFi Settings on the Thermostat

  1. On the thermostat, go to Main Menu
  2. Tap Settings, then Wi-Fi
  3. Make sure it shows Connected
  4. If not, select your network and enter the password

Use 2.4GHz Network

Ecobee thermostats work best on 2.4GHz networks. If your router combines both bands under one name, the thermostat may connect to 5GHz and have issues. Create a separate 2.4GHz network if possible.

Restart Your Router

  1. Unplug your router from power
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Plug it back in
  4. Wait 2-3 minutes for it to fully restart
  5. Check if Ecobee reconnects

Check Ecobee Server Status

Sometimes Ecobee servers have outages that cause thermostats to show offline. Check the Ecobee status page or their social media for any reported issues.

Re-register the Thermostat

If the thermostat connects to WiFi but still shows offline in the app:

  1. On the thermostat, go to Main Menu then Settings
  2. Tap Reset, then Reset Registration
  3. Open the Ecobee app and add the thermostat again
