Understanding the Issue
The Google Nest Audio is a smart speaker designed for high-quality music playback and Google Assistant voice commands. When the speaker stops responding to voice commands or produces distorted, quiet, or no sound, the problem typically involves the microphone, network connectivity, software, or audio configuration.
Common Causes
- The microphone is muted via the hardware switch on the back
- Wi-Fi connectivity is disrupted, preventing Assistant from processing commands
- The speaker volume is set to zero or very low
- A software glitch has caused the speaker to become unresponsive
- The linked music service account has expired or been disconnected
- The power adapter is not providing adequate power
- The speaker is in a group and audio routing conflicts are occurring
Step 1: Check the Microphone
- Look at the back of the Nest Audio for the microphone mute switch.
- When the microphone is muted, four orange LEDs will be visible on the top of the speaker.
- Toggle the switch to unmute the microphone. The orange lights will turn off, confirming the microphone is active.
- Say "Hey Google" to test if the speaker responds. If it does not, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Check Volume and Audio Output
- Say "Hey Google, set volume to 50 percent" to ensure the volume is at an audible level.
- If the speaker does not respond to voice, use the touch controls on top of the speaker — tap the right side to increase volume and the left side to decrease it.
- In the Google Home app, select the Nest Audio and check the volume slider. Move it to at least 50 percent and try playing music.
- If you hear distorted audio, reduce the volume and check if the distortion continues. Persistent distortion at any volume may indicate a speaker hardware issue.
Step 3: Verify Wi-Fi Connection
- Open the Google Home app and select the Nest Audio.
- If it shows as Offline, the speaker has lost its Wi-Fi connection.
- Check that your Wi-Fi router is online and other devices can connect.
- Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
- If you changed your Wi-Fi password or router, you will need to factory reset the Nest Audio and set it up again to enter the new credentials.
Step 4: Restart the Nest Audio
- Unplug the Nest Audio from its power adapter.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in. The speaker will boot up — you will see the LEDs activate on top.
- Wait one to two minutes for the speaker to fully reconnect to Wi-Fi and Google services.
- Test by saying "Hey Google, what time is it?"
Step 5: Check Linked Services
- If voice commands work but music does not play, your default music service may be disconnected.
- Open the Google Home app, go to Settings > Music, and verify your default music service (Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, etc.) is linked and active.
- If the service account has expired, sign in again or choose a different default service.
- Test by saying "Hey Google, play music" to confirm playback works.
Step 6: Check Speaker Group Settings
- If the Nest Audio is part of a speaker group or stereo pair, issues with one device can affect the group.
- In the Google Home app, check if the Nest Audio is in a group by selecting it and looking at group membership in its settings.
- Temporarily remove the speaker from the group and test it individually.
- If it works alone, the issue is with the group configuration. Remove and recreate the group.
Step 7: Factory Reset
- If the Nest Audio remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset.
- Turn off the microphone mute switch (unmute).
- Press and hold the center of the top of the Nest Audio for about 10 seconds. The Assistant will confirm the factory reset is starting.
- Wait for the reset to complete (about one minute).
- Set up the Nest Audio again using the Google Home app — connect to Wi-Fi, sign in, and configure your preferences.
Additional Tips
- If the Nest Audio repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi, try assigning it a static IP address in your router settings or move it closer to the router.
- The Nest Audio does not have a 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth output. All audio is played through the built-in speaker or cast over Wi-Fi.
- If sound quality has degraded over time, check for obstructions around the speaker grille and ensure it is in an open location, not pressed against a wall or inside a cabinet.
