Govee LED strip lights offer both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity for smart control. However, many users experience connection issues during initial setup or when trying to integrate with smart home systems. This guide covers solutions for both WiFi and Bluetooth connection problems.

Common Causes

  • 5GHz WiFi network - Govee lights only work with 2.4GHz WiFi
  • Location permission denied - The Govee app needs location access for Bluetooth pairing
  • VPN interference - Active VPN connections can block device discovery
  • WiFi password issues - Special characters or trailing spaces can cause connection failures
  • Bluetooth-only model - Some Govee lights only support Bluetooth, not WiFi

WiFi Connection Fixes

Step 1: Verify 2.4GHz Network

All Govee WiFi lights only work with 2.4GHz networks. If you have a dual-band router:

  • Create separate network names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz
  • Connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network before setup
  • Keep your phone connected to 2.4GHz during the entire setup process

Step 2: Check WiFi Password

Make sure your WiFi password does not have:

  • A space at the end
  • Special characters that may not be supported
  • More than the maximum length supported by the device

Step 3: Disable VPN

Turn off any VPN running on your phone before attempting to connect. VPNs can block local network device discovery.

Step 4: Check Router Settings

Make sure your router does not have MAC address filtering enabled that would block new devices from connecting.

Bluetooth Connection Fixes

Step 1: Enable Location Permission

The Govee app requires location access to discover Bluetooth devices:

  1. Go to your phone Settings
  2. Find the Govee app
  3. Enable Location permission
  4. Also ensure Bluetooth is enabled

Step 2: Power Cycle the Lights

Unplug the LED strip control box from power for 5 minutes, then plug it back in and try connecting again.

Step 3: Update the Govee App

Make sure you have the latest version of the Govee Home app installed from the App Store or Google Play.

Factory Reset

If nothing else works, reset the LED strip to factory settings:

  1. Hold the power button on the control box
  2. While holding power, press the middle button 4 times
  3. The lights should flash to confirm the reset
  4. Try connecting again as a new device

Note About WiFi Models

Not all Govee LED strips have WiFi capability. Some models only work over Bluetooth. Check your product specifications to confirm WiFi support before troubleshooting WiFi issues.
