Identifying the Issue
If your IKEA SOMRIG Shortcut Button or TRETAKT Smart Plug are not working, you may experience pairing failures with the Dirigera hub, devices showing as unreachable in the IKEA Home Smart app, button presses or plug toggles not registering, or devices connecting briefly then dropping off. The SOMRIG and TRETAKT use the Thread protocol, which communicates differently from older Zigbee-based TRADFRI devices and has its own connectivity considerations.
Common Causes
- Thin Thread mesh network — With only one or two Thread devices, the mesh may be too sparse for reliable communication over distance
- Dirigera hub firmware out of date — Early Dirigera firmware had Thread stability issues that IKEA has since patched. Outdated firmware is one of the most common causes of Thread pairing failures
- Battery issues (SOMRIG) — The SOMRIG runs on a CR2032 coin cell, and a depleted battery will prevent Thread communication
- Device too far from a Thread router — The SOMRIG needs a nearby Thread router (like the powered TRETAKT) or the Dirigera hub within range
- Residual pairing data — A device previously paired to a different hub may retain old network credentials that conflict with a new setup
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Update the Dirigera hub firmware. This is the most important step. Open the IKEA Home Smart app, go to Settings, select your hub, and install any available updates. Wait for the hub to reboot completely before proceeding.
- Factory reset the SOMRIG. Remove the CR2032 battery, wait 10 seconds, reinsert it, then press and hold the pairing button on the back for 10 seconds. The LED will flash to confirm. Use a brand-new battery if you suspect the current one is low.
- Factory reset the TRETAKT. Unplug the plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and immediately press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. This clears all previous Thread network data.
- Pair the TRETAKT first. Start with the TRETAKT since it is a powered Thread router. In the IKEA Home Smart app, tap +, select Plugs, and follow the pairing flow. Having the TRETAKT online strengthens the mesh for the SOMRIG.
- Pair the SOMRIG. With the TRETAKT active, add the SOMRIG through the app by tapping + and selecting Shortcut buttons. Press the pairing button once to enter discovery mode. Keep it near the hub or TRETAKT during pairing.
- Test and relocate. Press the SOMRIG buttons and toggle the TRETAKT from the app. If both respond reliably, move them to their intended locations. If one drops at its permanent spot, add another powered Thread device in between.
When to Contact Support
If the TRETAKT LED never responds when plugged in, or the SOMRIG LED never flashes during a reset with a confirmed fresh battery, the device may be defective. Contact IKEA customer support with your proof of purchase. If the Dirigera hub cannot discover any Thread devices despite having the latest firmware, the hub's Thread radio may need diagnostic attention.
Prevention Tips
Build a robust Thread mesh by distributing multiple powered Thread devices throughout your home — each one acts as a router, creating redundant communication paths. Always keep your Dirigera hub firmware current, as IKEA actively improves Thread support with each update. For the SOMRIG, keep spare CR2032 batteries on hand and replace them proactively once a year. Avoid placing Thread devices behind large metal appliances or inside metal enclosures that can block the radio signal. Periodically check the IKEA Home Smart app to confirm all Thread devices show as connected.
