Identifying the Issue

If your iRobot Roomba j7+ is not cleaning effectively, having trouble connecting to WiFi, or exhibiting unusual behavior, start by identifying the specific symptoms. Common issues include the robot not picking up debris properly, getting stuck or going in circles, failing to connect to the iRobot Home app, not returning to the Clean Base, avoiding areas it should be cleaning, and producing error sounds or displaying error messages in the app. Knowing the exact problem will help you work through the right fix below.

Common Causes

Roomba j7+ issues typically fall into these categories:

  • Cleaning performance problems: Full dustbin, clogged filter, tangled brush roll or side brush, worn rubber extractors, or reduced suction from a blocked airflow path
  • WiFi and connectivity: Weak 2.4 GHz signal at the Clean Base location, router band steering issues, changed WiFi credentials, or outdated firmware
  • Navigation issues: Dirty front-facing camera lens, insufficient lighting for PrecisionVision Navigation, obstacles the robot cannot identify, or corrupted smart map data
  • Clean Base problems: Full auto-empty bag, clogged evacuation port, or the robot not docking properly due to misalignment

Step-by-Step Fixes

Fix Cleaning Performance Issues

  1. Open the dustbin and empty it. Even if it doesn't look completely full, debris can block the airflow path and reduce suction. Remove the filter and tap it firmly against a trash can to remove trapped dust. Replace the filter if it looks heavily discolored or clogged.
  2. Flip the robot over and inspect the dual rubber extractors (brush rolls). Pull them out and remove any hair, string, or fibers wrapped around them or their end caps. Clean the housing cavity while the extractors are removed.
  3. Check the side brush. If it is tangled with hair or the bristles are splayed and worn, clean or replace it. A damaged side brush cannot sweep debris into the robot's path effectively.
  4. Inspect the suction inlet and the evacuation port on the bottom of the robot for clogs. A blockage here prevents both effective cleaning and auto-emptying.
  5. If the robot is leaving debris behind in specific areas, check your smart map's suction settings in the iRobot Home app. Increase the suction level for high-traffic rooms or areas with pet hair.

Fix WiFi and App Connectivity

  1. Verify your phone and the Roomba are on the same 2.4 GHz WiFi network. The j7+ pairs via 2.4 GHz, so if your router uses band steering, temporarily create a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID.
  2. Reset the robot's WiFi by holding the Home and Spot Clean buttons for 20 seconds until the light ring flashes white. Re-pair through the iRobot Home app.
  3. Move the Clean Base closer to your WiFi router or install a mesh WiFi node near the base to improve signal strength and reliability.
  4. Update the iRobot Home app and check for robot firmware updates in the app settings. Firmware updates frequently fix connectivity bugs.

Fix Navigation and Obstacle Issues

  1. Clean the front-facing camera lens on the Roomba j7+ with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Smudges, dust, or pet hair on the lens can severely impact PrecisionVision Navigation and obstacle avoidance.
  2. Ensure rooms have adequate lighting when the robot is running. The j7+ relies on its camera for navigation and obstacle detection, and very dark rooms can cause it to get lost or miss areas.
  3. If the robot is avoiding areas it should clean, open the iRobot Home app and check for unintended keep-out zones on your smart map. Remove any zones that are blocking access to areas you want cleaned.
  4. If the smart map seems inaccurate or rooms are incorrectly defined, delete the map in the app and run a fresh mapping session with all doors open and lights on.

Fix Clean Base Problems

  1. If the Clean Base is not auto-emptying, check the bag by lifting the lid. Replace the bag if it is full or nearly full.
  2. Clean the evacuation port on the bottom of the robot and the suction inlet on the Clean Base. Debris buildup at either point will prevent automatic emptying.
  3. Make sure the Clean Base is on a flat surface and the robot is docking squarely. If the robot docks at an angle, the evacuation ports won't align.

Factory Reset

  1. If issues continue after all the above steps, perform a factory reset. Press and hold the Home, Spot Clean, and Clean buttons simultaneously for 20 seconds. The light ring will swirl white. The robot will reset to factory defaults, and you will need to set it up as a new device in the iRobot Home app, including creating a new smart map.

When to Contact Support

Contact iRobot customer support if the rubber extractors or wheels are physically damaged and won't spin, if the robot consistently fails to connect after a factory reset, if the front camera appears physically damaged or scratched, if the Clean Base motor sounds abnormal, or if persistent error codes in the app do not resolve after troubleshooting. iRobot offers support through the iRobot Home app, online at irobot.com, and by phone.

Prevention Tips

  • Empty the dustbin and clean the filter after every 2 to 3 runs, or more often in homes with pets
  • Remove hair and debris from the rubber extractors and side brush weekly
  • Replace the auto-empty bag when the iRobot Home app indicates it is full
  • Keep the front camera lens clean to maintain accurate navigation and obstacle avoidance
  • Regularly update firmware through the iRobot Home app for the latest fixes and feature improvements
  • Pick up small objects and loose cables from the floor before scheduled cleaning runs
