Identifying the Issue
If your Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer or a Caseta switch or dimmer is not pairing, you may see the device fail to appear during the add-device process in your respective app, or the pairing may time out with an error. For the Aurora, pairing occurs through the Philips Hue app via Zigbee, while Caseta switches and dimmers pair through the Lutron Caseta app via the Smart Bridge using Clear Connect RF. Identifying which protocol and app applies to your device is the first step in effective troubleshooting.
Common Causes
- For the Aurora: The Hue Bridge is out of Zigbee range, or the Aurora was previously paired to a different Hue Bridge
- For Caseta devices: The Smart Bridge is powered off, disconnected, or the device is out of Clear Connect RF range
- The device was previously paired to another system and needs a factory reset before re-pairing
- The app or hub firmware is outdated
- The maximum device limit has been reached on the bridge (75 for Caseta, 50 for Hue)
- Physical installation issues preventing the device from powering on fully
Step-by-Step Fixes
- For the Lutron Aurora (Zigbee/Hue):
- Ensure the Aurora is mounted on a toggle switch in the "on" position and the smart bulbs in the fixture are powered.
- Open the Philips Hue app, go to Settings, then "Accessory Setup," and tap "Add Accessory."
- Press and hold the Aurora knob inward for 5 seconds until the connected bulbs blink. This activates Zigbee pairing mode.
- If the Hue app does not detect it, factory reset the Aurora by pressing and holding the knob for 15 seconds until the lights flash rapidly. Then try pairing again.
- Check that your Hue Bridge is within Zigbee range. The Hue Bridge typically has a range of about 30 feet, but other Hue bulbs between the bridge and the Aurora act as Zigbee mesh repeaters to extend coverage.
- For Caseta switches and dimmers (Clear Connect RF):
- Confirm the Caseta Smart Bridge has two solid green LEDs and is connected to your router.
- Verify the switch or dimmer has power by checking its LED indicator and testing the physical buttons.
- Factory reset the Caseta device by pressing the top button three times quickly, then pressing and holding the bottom button until the LED blinks.
- In the Caseta app, go to "Add Device," select the correct device type, and follow the pairing prompts.
- If pairing still fails, move the Smart Bridge temporarily closer to the device during the pairing attempt.
- For both device types: Update the relevant app (Hue or Caseta) and check for firmware updates on the respective bridge.
When to Contact Support
For the Aurora, contact Philips Hue support if the device will not pair after a factory reset and you have confirmed the Hue Bridge is within range and has available device slots. For Caseta devices, contact Lutron technical support at 1-844-LUTRON1 if the device LED does not respond at all after installation, which could indicate a wiring problem or hardware defect.
Prevention Tips
Before installing new devices, check your bridge's device count in the respective app to ensure you have capacity. When purchasing a Lutron Aurora, confirm your switch is a toggle style, not a rocker or Decora paddle. For Caseta devices, pair them with the bridge before permanently installing them in the wall whenever possible, so you can test connectivity at the target location before committing to the install. Keep both the Hue and Caseta apps updated to their latest versions.
