Smart plugs, outlets, and power strips are the simplest way to make dumb devices smart. Plug in a lamp, a fan, a coffee maker - suddenly it's on a schedule, responds to voice commands, or shuts off when you leave. They're cheap enough to put everywhere, but there are real differences between products worth knowing about.
Energy monitoring is the underrated feature. Most people buy smart plugs for scheduling and voice control, but energy monitoring is where the real value is. See exactly how much power each device draws, find out what's costing you on standby, and set up automations based on usage - like an alert when the dryer finishes because power drops to near zero. The price difference is usually just a few dollars. Get it every time.
The 15A rating matters. Most smart plugs handle 15 amps, which covers nearly anything on a standard outlet. But cheaper models are only rated for 10A and can't safely handle space heaters, window AC units, or other high-draw devices. Always check the rating, especially for heating or cooling appliances. An undersized plug with a high-draw device is a fire risk.
Plugs vs. outlets vs. power strips serve different needs. Plug-in smart plugs are portable and rental-friendly. In-wall outlets look cleaner but need basic electrical work. Smart power strips control multiple devices independently, great for entertainment centers where you want to kill standby power on a group of devices.
Matter support is worth prioritizing. It means the plug works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings without needing the manufacturer's app. This matters for plugs especially because you'll accumulate a bunch and don't want five different apps managing them.
Indoor vs. outdoor ratings: if you need a plug for holiday lights or anything outside, make sure it's rated for outdoor use (IP44 or higher). Don't use an indoor plug outside, even in a covered area.
Check the physical size. Some plugs are bulky enough to block the adjacent outlet. Look for compact designs, especially if outlet space is tight.
