Smart Garage Doors and Driveway Monitoring

Smart Garage Door Controllers

Your garage door is probably the largest entry point to your home, and most people forget to close it at least a few times a year. A smart garage controller adds remote monitoring, automatic closing, and integration with your smart home ecosystem.

Popular options:

  • myQ by Chamberlain — Works with most garage door openers. Free app control, but some integrations require a subscription. HomeKit support via the myQ bridge.
  • Meross Smart Garage Door Opener — Affordable, direct HomeKit/Alexa/Google support, no subscription fees.
  • Tailwind iQ3 — Supports up to 3 doors, auto open/close based on GPS, Home Assistant integration via local API.
  • Ratgdo — Open-source option for Security+ 2.0 openers (common Chamberlain/LiftMaster models). Local control, no cloud required.

Essential Automations

Once your garage door is smart, set up these automations:

  • Auto-close after 10 minutes — If the door has been open for 10 minutes with no activity, close it automatically
  • Close at bedtime — A nightly routine that checks and closes the garage if it's open
  • Open on arrival — Use geofencing to open the garage as you approach home
  • Notification when opened — Get an alert anytime the garage opens when you're not home

Driveway Monitoring

Knowing when someone enters your driveway is valuable for both security and convenience:

  • Driveway motion sensors — Battery-powered sensors like the Guardline or Hosmart that alert when vehicles or people are detected
  • Smart cameras with vehicle detection — Cameras like the Reolink or Amcrest can distinguish vehicles from animals to reduce false alerts
  • Smart doorbells — A video doorbell at the front door captures anyone approaching on foot

Integration With Your Security System

Your garage and driveway devices should tie into your broader security setup:

  • When the garage opens and you're not home, trigger cameras to record and send a notification
  • When driveway motion is detected at night, turn on outdoor lights
  • Include garage door status in your "leaving home" routine (auto-close everything)
  • Add a garage door sensor to your security panel's monitored zones
