What's in the Box
Your GE Smart Shades package includes the motorized roller shade, a rechargeable battery or power adapter (depending on your model variant), mounting brackets, installation hardware, and a quick start guide. The shades connect via Bluetooth and WiFi through the Cync app, giving you app-based control, voice assistant support, and scheduling without requiring a separate hub.
Before You Begin
- Download the Cync app from the App Store or Google Play
- Create or sign into your Cync account
- Verify your home WiFi is broadcasting a 2.4GHz network
- Measure your window to confirm the shade dimensions match your order
- Gather installation tools: drill, screwdriver, level, pencil, measuring tape, and appropriate wall anchors if not mounting into wood studs or a window frame
- Charge the battery pack fully before installation if your model uses a rechargeable battery (typically 4 to 6 hours for initial charge)
Step-by-Step Installation
- Mark the bracket positions. Hold the mounting brackets at the desired height on either side of the window frame (inside mount) or on the wall above the window (outside mount). Use a level to ensure they're aligned, and mark the screw holes with a pencil.
- Install the brackets. Drill pilot holes at your marks and secure the brackets using the provided screws. If mounting into drywall without a stud, use wall anchors rated for the shade's weight. Make sure both brackets are level and at the same height.
- Attach the shade. Slide or snap the roller shade into the mounted brackets according to the instructions for your specific bracket style. The shade should sit securely and roll smoothly. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it won't come loose.
- Connect power. If your model uses a rechargeable battery, attach the charged battery pack to the designated port on the shade motor. If using a power adapter, route the cord neatly along the window frame to the nearest outlet.
- Test manual operation. Press the button on the shade motor to raise and lower the shade. This confirms the motor is powered and the shade rolls correctly before you begin smart setup.
App Pairing and WiFi Setup
- Open the Cync app. Tap the + button to add a new device. Select Smart Shades from the device list.
- Enable Bluetooth pairing. The app uses Bluetooth for the initial connection. Make sure Bluetooth is on and your phone is within a few feet of the shade motor.
- Enter WiFi credentials. When prompted, choose your 2.4GHz WiFi network and type in the password. The app transfers the credentials to the shade via Bluetooth.
- Set the shade limits. The Cync app will walk you through setting the fully open and fully closed positions for the shade. These limits ensure the shade stops at the correct points every time.
- Name and assign a room. Give the shade a descriptive name like "Bedroom Window" and assign it to a room in the app.
Smart Home Integration
GE Smart Shades work with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa through the Cync app. Use voice commands like "Alexa, close the bedroom shades" or "Hey Google, open the living room shades to 50 percent." Create schedules in the Cync app to open shades at sunrise and close them at sunset, or group multiple shades together for synchronized control across a room.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the shade motor doesn't respond, check that the battery is fully charged or the power adapter is connected. If the Cync app can't find the shade, make sure Bluetooth is enabled and you're close to the device. If the shade stops at the wrong position, recalibrate the open and close limits in the Cync app's device settings. For battery-powered models, expect to recharge every few months depending on how frequently you operate the shade — the app will notify you when the battery is running low.
