What's in the Box

Your iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ package should include: the Roomba Combo j9+ robot vacuum and mop, the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station, a power cord, an extra side brush, a mopping pad, an auto-empty bag, and the quick start guide. Check all items for damage before starting setup.

Prerequisites

Make sure you have the following before beginning:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network with the password handy (the Roomba Combo j9+ connects via 2.4 GHz WiFi)
  • The iRobot Home app installed on your iOS or Android smartphone
  • A flat area near a wall outlet for the Clean Base with at least 1.5 feet of clearance on each side and 4 feet of open space in front
  • Floors cleared of loose cables, small objects, and clutter for the initial mapping run

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Set up the Clean Base Auto-Empty Station: Place the Clean Base against a wall on a hard, level surface. Plug in the power cord and ensure the green light on the base illuminates. Install an auto-empty bag by lifting the lid and placing the bag inside the compartment until it clicks into place.
  2. Prepare the Roomba Combo j9+: Remove all packaging materials, tape, and protective films from the robot. The Roomba Combo j9+ features a retractable mopping pad that stows on top of the robot when vacuuming and deploys when mopping. Install the side brush by pressing it onto the spindle on the underside of the robot. Fill the onboard water tank with clean water for mopping.
  3. Charge the robot: Place the Roomba Combo j9+ on the Clean Base to begin charging. The battery indicator ring will pulse while charging. Allow a full charge before the first run, which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Pair with the iRobot Home app: Open the iRobot Home app and create an account or sign in. Tap the "+" icon and select "Roomba Combo j9+" from the device list. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the robot to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Press and hold the Home and Spot Clean buttons on the robot simultaneously when prompted until you hear a tone.
  5. Run the initial mapping session: Start a mapping run from the iRobot Home app. The Roomba Combo j9+ uses PrecisionVision Navigation with its front-facing camera to build a detailed map of your home while identifying and avoiding obstacles. Keep all doors open and lights on during the mapping process for the best results. The first run may take longer than usual as the robot prioritizes exploration.
  6. Customize your smart map: After mapping, the iRobot Home app will present your floor plan with automatically detected rooms. You can rename rooms, merge or divide them, set cleaning preferences per room (vacuum only, mop only, or both), and create keep-out zones. Configure the mopping intensity and vacuum suction level for each room based on your floor type.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Roomba Combo j9+ integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT. Link your iRobot account in the Alexa or Google Home app to use voice commands like "Alexa, ask Roomba to start cleaning" or "Hey Google, tell Roomba to clean the kitchen." With IFTTT, you can create advanced automations — for example, having the Roomba start cleaning when your smart doorbell detects you've left home. The iRobot Home app also supports geofencing through iRobot OS, which can suggest or automatically start cleaning when it detects you've left the house.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the robot doesn't connect during app pairing, make sure your phone is on a 2.4 GHz network — the Roomba does not support 5 GHz during initial setup. Reset the robot's WiFi by holding the Home and Spot Clean buttons for 20 seconds until the light ring turns white. If the Clean Base isn't auto-emptying, check that the bag is properly installed and not full. If the mopping pad isn't deploying, ensure the water tank is filled and that mopping is enabled for the selected room in the iRobot Home app. Check for firmware updates in the app after setup to get the latest features and fixes.
