What's in the Box
Your Lutron Serena Shades package includes the motorized roller shade or honeycomb shade (depending on your order), mounting brackets, a battery wand (for battery-powered models) or power supply (for wired models), and installation hardware. Some packages also include a Pico remote for shades. Serena Shades are custom-made to your window measurements and fabric selection, so verify that the dimensions and style match your order before beginning installation.
Prerequisites
Before installing Serena Shades, make sure you have:
- A Lutron Caseta Smart Bridge or RadioRA 3 processor set up and connected to your network
- The Lutron Caseta app installed on your smartphone
- A drill with a 3/32" drill bit and a Phillips-head screwdriver
- A level to ensure the mounting brackets are straight
- A step stool or ladder to reach the window frame or ceiling
- Fresh D-cell batteries if using battery-powered shades
Serena Shades communicate with the Caseta Smart Bridge using Lutron's Clear Connect RF protocol. The shades need to be within range of the bridge, which is typically up to 30 feet through standard walls. For larger homes, consider bridge placement carefully.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Decide whether you are mounting inside the window frame (inside mount) or on the wall above the window (outside mount). Your brackets and shade width will differ based on this choice, selected during ordering.
- For inside mount: Position the brackets inside the window frame at the top corners, flush with the front edge. Use the level to ensure they are aligned, then mark and drill pilot holes. Secure the brackets with the provided screws.
- For outside mount: Position the brackets above the window at your desired height. Mark the screw locations using a level, drill pilot holes, and attach the brackets to the wall.
- Slide the shade headrail into the mounted brackets until it clicks into place. Most Serena brackets use a spring-loaded clip mechanism that locks the shade securely.
- For battery-powered models: Insert the battery wand into the port on the headrail. The wand holds multiple D-cell batteries and provides months of operation depending on usage frequency.
- For hardwired models: Connect the power supply to the headrail and plug it into a nearby outlet or hardwired junction box.
- Test the shade by pressing the button on the headrail or using the included Pico remote. The shade should raise and lower smoothly.
App Pairing
Open the Lutron Caseta app and tap "Add Device," then select "Serena Shades." Follow the prompts to put the shade into pairing mode by pressing the pairing button on the headrail. The bridge detects the shade via Clear Connect RF and adds it to your system. Assign the shade a descriptive name and room. In the app, you can set upper and lower travel limits if the default positions need adjustment, and you can also set a "favorite" position, such as halfway open, that you can activate with a single tap.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Serena Shades integrate with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant through the Caseta bridge. Use voice commands like "Alexa, close the bedroom shades" or "Hey Siri, open the living room shades to 50%." Schedule the shades to open at sunrise and close at sunset using the Caseta app's astronomical clock feature. Group multiple shades in the same room for synchronized operation, or create scenes that combine shades with lighting for a coordinated "Good Night" routine that dims the lights and closes all shades.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the shades do not respond, check the battery level in the Caseta app under the shade's device settings. Low batteries are the most common cause of unresponsive shades. If the shade moves unevenly or stops mid-travel, recalibrate the travel limits in the app. For pairing issues, ensure the bridge has two solid green LEDs and that the shade is powered. A factory reset of the shade can be performed by pressing and holding the button on the headrail for 15 seconds until the shade jogs slightly, confirming the reset.
