What You Will Need
- Apple HomePod (2nd Generation) and included power cable
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.3 or later
- An active Apple ID signed into iCloud
- A stable Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)
- A flat, hard surface with at least six inches of clearance on all sides
Choosing the Right Location
The HomePod (2nd Gen) uses computational audio to analyze its surroundings and optimize sound output in real time. For the best results, place it on a solid surface such as a countertop, shelf, or side table. Avoid placing it on soft surfaces like beds or couches, which can muffle the built-in woofer. Keep it away from walls and corners if possible, as the speaker needs space to calibrate its room-sensing technology. Make sure there are no objects directly on top of the speaker that could block the touch-sensitive display.
Initial Setup
- Plug the HomePod into a power outlet using the included power cable. Wait for a white spinning light to appear on the top of the speaker and a chime to play.
- Unlock your iPhone or iPad and hold it within a few inches of the HomePod. A setup card will appear on your device automatically.
- Tap Set Up on the card that appears. If the card does not appear, open the Home app and tap the + button, then select Add Accessory.
- Choose the room where the HomePod is located. This helps organize your smart home devices and allows Siri to understand room-specific commands.
- Enable or disable Personal Requests. When enabled, Siri can access your messages, calendar, reminders, and more when it recognizes your voice.
- Review and agree to the terms and conditions. Your HomePod will begin downloading the latest software and configuring itself. This process typically takes two to five minutes.
- When setup is complete, Siri will greet you and the HomePod is ready to use.
Transferring Settings from Your iPhone
During setup, the HomePod automatically transfers your Apple ID, Wi-Fi credentials, and Apple Music or iCloud settings from the paired iPhone or iPad. This means you do not need to manually enter your Wi-Fi password or sign in to any services. If you later change your Wi-Fi network, update it on your iPhone first, then the HomePod will follow.
Setting Up a Stereo Pair
If you have two HomePod (2nd Gen) speakers, you can pair them for stereo sound. Open the Home app, press and hold one of the HomePod tiles, scroll down, and tap Create Stereo Pair. Select the second HomePod and assign the left and right channels. The speakers will calibrate together for balanced audio. Both speakers must be in the same room within the Home app.
Configuring as a Home Hub
The HomePod (2nd Gen) automatically serves as a Home Hub when set up. This allows you to control your HomeKit and Matter-compatible accessories remotely when you are away from home. It also enables automations and shared access for household members. To verify, open the Home app, tap Home Settings, and check that the HomePod appears under Home Hubs & Bridges with a status of "Connected."
Tips for Getting Started
- Say "Hey Siri, update your software" periodically to ensure your HomePod runs the latest firmware.
- Use the Home app to adjust equalizer settings and enable or disable the built-in temperature and humidity sensor readings.
- Set up Intercom in the Home app to broadcast voice messages to other HomePod speakers and Apple devices throughout your home.
- Add the HomePod to scenes and automations, such as playing music when you arrive home or adjusting lights on a schedule.
