Common Causes
- Clock brightness set to zero or very low
- Adaptive brightness misreading ambient light conditions
- The LED display is configured to show information other than the time
- Software glitch preventing the clock display from rendering
- Do Not Disturb or Night Mode dimming the display beyond visibility
- Hardware issue with the LED dot-matrix panel
Step 1: Check Clock Brightness Settings
- Say "Alexa, set the clock brightness to 9" (the maximum setting on a 0-9 scale). This is the quickest way to determine if the display is working but set too dim.
- If the display lights up at maximum brightness, the issue was simply a low brightness setting. Adjust to your preferred level.
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Echo Dot with Clock > Settings > LED Display to adjust brightness and related options.
Step 2: Disable Adaptive Brightness
- The Echo Dot with Clock has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the LED display brightness. In very dark rooms, it may dim the display to near-invisible levels.
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Dot with Clock > Settings > LED Display > Adaptive Brightness and toggle it off.
- Manually set the brightness to a level that works in your room.
- If the display becomes too bright at night after disabling adaptive brightness, consider creating a routine that lowers brightness at bedtime instead.
Step 3: Check What the Display Is Showing
The LED dot-matrix display on the Echo Dot (5th Gen) with Clock can show more than just the time. If it appears blank, it may be stuck on an empty information screen.
- Say "Alexa, show the clock" to force the display back to the clock view.
- The display cycles between time, temperature, timers, and alarm information. If a timer recently ended or was dismissed, the display may briefly go blank before returning to the clock.
- If the display is showing a scrolling song title or other information, wait for it to finish or say "Alexa, stop" to clear it.
Step 4: Check Do Not Disturb and Night Mode
- When Do Not Disturb is enabled, the clock display may behave differently. Check the Alexa app under Devices > Echo Dot > Do Not Disturb.
- If DND is scheduled, the display may dim significantly during those hours. Toggle DND off temporarily to test.
- Say "Alexa, turn off Do Not Disturb" as a quick toggle.
Step 5: Restart the Echo Dot with Clock
- Unplug the device from the power outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and observe the LED display during startup. The display should briefly show a startup animation or the Amazon logo pattern.
- If you see the startup animation but the clock does not appear afterward, there may be a software issue that requires an update.
Step 6: Update Software
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Dot with Clock > Settings > Device Software Version.
- Ensure the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Restart it while connected, and it will automatically check for and install any pending updates.
- After updating, the device will restart. Check if the LED display is functioning correctly.
Step 7: Test the LED Display
- Try triggering different display modes to confirm the LEDs are working:
- Say "Alexa, set a timer for 1 minute" - the timer countdown should appear on the display.
- Say "Alexa, what's the temperature outside?" - the temperature should briefly display.
- Say "Alexa, set an alarm for 5 minutes from now" - the alarm time should display.
- If some information displays but the clock does not, the issue is software-related rather than hardware.
Step 8: Factory Reset
- If the LED display remains non-functional, factory reset the device.
- Press and hold the Action button on top for 20 seconds until the light ring flashes orange.
- Set up the device from scratch through the Alexa app.
- During setup, check if the LED display shows the clock correctly.
When to Contact Support
If no LED segments light up at any brightness level, even during startup and after a factory reset, the LED panel may have a hardware defect. Contact Amazon Customer Support for a warranty replacement. If only certain segments or portions of the display are not working (partial display), this also indicates a hardware issue.
