The Aqara Contact Sensor T1 is a Zigbee contact sensor that detects whether a door, window, or other opening is in an open or closed state. It consists of a sensor body and a magnet that work together through magnetic proximity. The T1 version features a sleeker design and improved battery life compared to the original Aqara door and window sensor.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Contact Sensor T1 (sensor body and magnet)
  • Aqara Hub (M2, M3, or Camera Hub G3) already set up on your network
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • CR1632 or CR2032 battery (included, depending on variant)
  • Included adhesive pads

Preparing the Sensor

  1. Remove the sensor body and magnet from the packaging.
  2. Pull the battery isolation tab from the sensor body to activate the battery.
  3. The LED indicator on the sensor should flash once to confirm it has power.

Pairing with Your Aqara Hub

  1. Open the Aqara Home app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Contact Sensor T1 from the device list, or scan the QR code on the packaging.
  4. Choose the Aqara Hub you want to pair with.
  5. Press and hold the reset button on the sensor for 5 seconds until the LED begins flashing rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  6. Wait for the app to discover and connect the sensor.
  7. Assign it to a room and give it a descriptive name like "Garage Door T1" or "Patio Window."

Installing the Sensor

  1. Identify the placement: the sensor body goes on the fixed frame (door frame, window frame) and the magnet goes on the moving part (door or window).
  2. Clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol to ensure strong adhesion.
  3. Peel the adhesive backing from the sensor body and press firmly onto the frame.
  4. Peel the adhesive from the magnet and press it onto the door or window, aligned directly beside the sensor body.
  5. When the door or window is closed, the sensor and magnet should be no more than 15 mm apart.
  6. Verify the alignment marks on the sensor and magnet line up when the door or window is closed.

Testing the Installation

  1. Open the door or window. Check the Aqara Home app — the sensor should immediately show an "Open" status.
  2. Close the door or window. The status should change to "Closed."
  3. If the sensor does not register correctly, adjust the magnet's position to be closer to the sensor body.
  4. Test from several open and close cycles to confirm reliable operation.

Setting Up Automations

Contact sensors are among the most versatile automation triggers. Navigate to the Automations tab in the Aqara Home app to set up rules:

  • Closet light — Turn on a smart light when the closet door opens and off when it closes. This is one of the most popular and satisfying smart home automations.
  • Entry notification — Send a push notification when the front door opens while you are away.
  • HVAC efficiency — Pause air conditioning or heating when a window is opened, and resume when it closes.
  • Garage monitoring — Alert you if the garage door has been left open for more than 10 minutes.
  • Welcome home scene — Trigger a lighting scene when the front door opens in the evening.

Advanced Use Cases

The Contact Sensor T1 is not limited to doors and windows. You can use it creatively on any object that opens and closes or separates into two parts:

  • Mailbox door — get notified when mail arrives.
  • Medicine cabinet — track when medications are accessed.
  • Laptop lid — trigger a desk scene when you open your laptop.
  • Dryer door — know when someone opens the dryer to remove laundry.

Differences from the Original Sensor

  • The T1 has a slimmer, more modern design that blends better on door and window frames.
  • Improved battery life compared to the original sensor.
  • Faster response time for quicker automation triggers.
  • The core functionality is the same — both detect open and closed states using magnetic proximity.

Tips

  • The battery typically lasts two to three years. The app will warn you when it needs replacement.
  • For textured surfaces where adhesive does not hold, use thin double-sided mounting tape or a small bracket with screws.
  • Deploy multiple sensors across your home for comprehensive monitoring of all entry points.
  • The sensor must remain within Zigbee range of your hub (typically 10 to 15 meters through walls).
