The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 (Matter) is a contact sensor that connects directly to your smart home platform via the Matter protocol, without requiring an Aqara Hub. It works with Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Amazon Alexa, providing cross-platform flexibility. Like the standard P2, it detects when doors, windows, and other openings are opened or closed.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 (Matter version)
  • A Matter-compatible smart home hub (Apple HomePod/Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, Samsung SmartThings hub, or Amazon Echo 4th gen or newer)
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • CR2 battery (included)
  • Included adhesive pads for sensor and magnet

Preparing the Sensor

  1. Remove the sensor body and magnet from the packaging.
  2. Pull the battery isolation tab from the sensor body to activate the CR2 battery.
  3. The LED should flash to confirm the sensor is powered on.

Pairing via Matter

The key difference with the Matter version is that it pairs directly to your smart home platform rather than to an Aqara Hub. You have two pairing options:

Option 1: Pair Directly to Your Platform

  1. Open your smart home platform app — Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or Amazon Alexa.
  2. Start the "Add Device" or "Add Accessory" process in the app.
  3. Scan the Matter QR code found on the sensor itself or on the included card in the box.
  4. Press and hold the reset button on the sensor for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, entering pairing mode.
  5. Wait for the app to discover and add the sensor. This may take up to a minute.
  6. Assign the sensor to a room and name it.

Option 2: Pair Through the Aqara Home App First

  1. Open the Aqara Home app and tap the + icon.
  2. Select the Door and Window Sensor P2 (Matter).
  3. Follow the prompts to add the sensor. The app will set up the sensor and then provide a Matter sharing code.
  4. Use this code to add the sensor to your preferred smart home platform.

Installing on Your Door or Window

  1. The sensor body attaches to the fixed frame (door frame or window frame) and the magnet goes on the moving part (door or window).
  2. Clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol for proper adhesion.
  3. Peel the adhesive backing from the sensor body and press it onto the frame.
  4. Peel the adhesive backing from the magnet and attach it to the door or window, aligning it with the sensor body.
  5. When closed, the gap between the sensor and magnet should be no more than 20 mm.
  6. Check the alignment marks to ensure correct orientation.

Testing the Sensor

  1. Open the door or window and check your smart home app. The sensor status should show "Open."
  2. Close the door or window. The status should change to "Closed" or "Not Detected."
  3. If the sensor does not respond, verify the magnet is close enough to the sensor body when closed.

Creating Automations

Since the sensor connects directly to your platform, you create automations in that platform's app:

  • Apple Home — Go to the Automation tab, tap +, choose "A Sensor Detects Something," select your door sensor, and set the trigger (opens or closes). Add actions like turning on lights.
  • Google Home — Go to Automations, create a new routine, use the sensor as a starter, and add actions.
  • SmartThings — Use the Routines feature to trigger actions when the sensor state changes.

You can also create automations in the Aqara Home app if you paired through it first.

Advantages of the Matter Version

  • No Aqara Hub required — Pairs directly to your existing smart home ecosystem.
  • Cross-platform — Works natively with Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, and Alexa.
  • Thread support — Uses the Thread protocol for communication, which builds a self-healing mesh network with other Thread devices for improved range and reliability.
  • Multi-platform — Can be shared to multiple platforms simultaneously via Matter multi-admin.

Tips

  • The CR2 battery typically lasts two to three years.
  • Ensure you have a Thread border router in your home for the sensor to connect through — devices like Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, or Aqara Hub M3 serve this function.
  • If the sensor has trouble connecting, make sure it is within range of a Thread border router and that your platform is updated to the latest firmware.
  • You can factory reset the sensor by holding the reset button for 10 seconds if you need to re-pair it to a different platform.
