The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is an upgraded Zigbee sensor that combines a passive infrared (PIR) motion detector with a high-precision ambient light sensor. It features faster response times, adjustable detection sensitivity, configurable retrigger intervals, and more accurate lux readings than the original motion sensor, making it ideal for reliable motion-activated lighting automations.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2
  • Aqara Hub (M2, M3, or Camera Hub G3) already set up on your network
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • CR2450 coin cell battery (included)
  • Included magnetic mount and adhesive pad

Preparing the Sensor

  1. Remove the sensor from its packaging.
  2. Pull the plastic battery isolation tab to activate the CR2450 battery.
  3. The LED on the front of the sensor should flash once to confirm power.

Pairing with Your Aqara Hub

  1. Open the Aqara Home app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Motion and Light Sensor P2 from the device list, or scan the QR code on the packaging.
  4. Choose the Aqara Hub to pair with.
  5. Press and hold the reset button on the sensor for 5 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly.
  6. Wait for the app to discover and connect the sensor.
  7. Assign it to a room and name it, such as "Kitchen Motion P2" or "Hallway Sensor."

Choosing the Best Location

The P2 has a detection range of up to 7 meters and a wide field of view. For optimal performance:

  • Mount at a height of 1.5 to 2.1 meters (5 to 7 feet) for the best coverage of people walking through the detection zone.
  • Point the sensor toward doorways, hallways, or room entrances where motion naturally occurs.
  • Avoid aiming at heat sources (radiators, heating vents, sunny windows) that can cause false PIR triggers.
  • Do not place behind glass — PIR sensors cannot detect motion through glass surfaces.
  • For the light sensor to give accurate readings, avoid mounting the unit directly under or next to a bright light fixture.

Mounting the Sensor

  1. Attach the adhesive pad to the flat side of the magnetic mount.
  2. Peel the backing and press the mount firmly against the wall, door frame, or shelf.
  3. Place the sensor on the magnetic mount. The magnet lets you easily adjust the angle for precise aiming.
  4. Walk through the detection zone and verify in the Aqara Home app that motion is being registered.

Configuring Detection Settings

The P2's main advantage is its configurable settings, accessible in the Aqara Home app under the sensor's device page:

  • Sensitivity — Choose from multiple levels (typically low, medium, high). Use low sensitivity for rooms with pets and high sensitivity for areas where you want to catch all motion.
  • Retrigger interval — Set how soon after detecting motion the sensor can trigger again. Shorter intervals (5 to 15 seconds) are ideal for responsive lighting. Longer intervals reduce battery consumption.
  • Light level threshold — Configure the lux threshold used in automations. The enhanced light sensor provides more precise and granular readings than the basic motion sensor.

Creating Motion and Light Automations

  1. Go to the Automations tab in the Aqara Home app.
  2. Tap + to create a new automation.
  3. Select the Motion and Light Sensor P2 as the trigger.
  4. Choose "Motion detected" as the trigger event.
  5. Add a condition: "Light level is below X lux" to avoid turning on lights during the day.
  6. Add an action — turn on a light, activate a scene, or trigger another device.
  7. Save the automation.

Create a companion automation for "No motion for X minutes" to turn lights back off after the room is vacated.

Practical Use Cases

  • Hallway nightlight — Turn on a dim light when motion is detected and lux is below 20, then turn off after 3 minutes of no motion.
  • Bathroom automation — Turn on lights and a vent fan on motion detection. Turn off the fan 10 minutes after the last motion.
  • Stairway safety — Illuminate stairs immediately when someone approaches, using the fast retrigger interval for instant response.
  • Light-dependent scenes — Use the precise lux sensor to adjust smart light brightness based on how much natural light is already in the room.

Tips

  • The CR2450 battery typically lasts about two years, though heavy motion traffic and short retrigger intervals will reduce battery life.
  • Set the retrigger interval to 5 to 10 seconds for lighting automations where responsiveness matters.
  • If you experience false triggers, try lowering the sensitivity or moving the sensor away from heat-producing equipment.
  • The P2 works well alongside presence sensors — use the P2 for fast initial detection and a presence sensor (FP1, FP2) for long-term occupancy.
