The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is an upgraded Zigbee motion detector with adjustable sensitivity, customizable detection timeout, and a wider detection range than the original Aqara Motion Sensor. It connects to your Aqara Hub and can trigger automations like turning on lights when motion is detected.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Motion Sensor P1
  • Aqara Hub (M2, M3, or Camera Hub G3) already set up on your network
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • CR2450 coin cell battery (included)
  • Included magnetic mount and adhesive pad

Preparing the Sensor

  1. Remove the Motion Sensor P1 from its packaging.
  2. Pull the plastic battery isolation tab from the back of the sensor to activate the CR2450 battery.
  3. The small LED on the front of the sensor should flash once to confirm power.

Pairing with Your Aqara Hub

  1. Open the Aqara Home app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Motion Sensor P1 from the device list, or scan the QR code on the packaging.
  4. Choose the Aqara Hub you want to pair with.
  5. Press and hold the reset button on the bottom or back of the sensor for 5 seconds until the LED begins flashing rapidly.
  6. Wait for the app to discover and connect the sensor.
  7. Assign it to a room and give it a name such as "Hallway Motion" or "Bathroom Sensor."

Choosing the Right Location

The P1 uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor with a detection range of up to 7 meters and a 170-degree field of view. For optimal performance:

  • Mount the sensor at a height of approximately 1.5 to 2.1 meters (5 to 7 feet) for best coverage. This is typically the height of a door frame or shelf.
  • Point the sensor toward the area where you want to detect movement — for example, facing down a hallway or across a room entrance.
  • Avoid pointing the sensor directly at heat sources such as radiators, heating vents, or sunny windows, which can cause false triggers.
  • Avoid placing the sensor behind glass, as PIR sensors cannot detect motion through glass.

Mounting the Sensor

  1. Attach the adhesive pad to the flat side of the magnetic mount.
  2. Peel the adhesive backing and press the mount firmly against the wall, door frame, or shelf at your chosen location.
  3. Place the sensor on the magnetic mount. The magnet allows you to easily adjust the angle for precise aim.
  4. Walk through the detection zone and check the Aqara Home app to confirm the sensor registers your movement.

Adjusting Sensitivity and Timeout

The P1's key advantage over the basic Motion Sensor is its configurable settings:

  • Sensitivity — In the sensor settings within the Aqara Home app, choose from three sensitivity levels: low, medium, or high. Use low sensitivity for areas with pets or frequent minor movement, and high sensitivity for low-traffic areas where you want to catch all motion.
  • Detection timeout — Set how long after the last detected motion the sensor reports "no motion." Options typically range from about 5 seconds to several minutes. A shorter timeout allows lights to turn off sooner after you leave a room, while a longer timeout prevents lights from flickering off while you are still in the room but momentarily still.

Setting Up Motion Automations

  1. Go to the Automations tab in the Aqara Home app.
  2. Tap + to create a new automation.
  3. Select Motion Sensor P1 as the trigger.
  4. Choose "Motion detected" as the condition.
  5. Add an action such as turning on a light or activating a scene.
  6. Optionally add time-based conditions — for example, only trigger when it is between sunset and sunrise.
  7. Create a second automation for "No motion for X minutes" to turn the light back off.

Practical Automation Ideas

  • Turn on hallway lights when motion is detected at night, and turn them off after 2 minutes of no motion.
  • Activate a welcome scene when someone enters the living room.
  • Send a notification to your phone when motion is detected while you are away from home.
  • Turn on a bathroom fan when motion is detected and turn it off 10 minutes after no motion.

Tips

  • The CR2450 battery typically lasts about two years depending on how frequently motion is detected.
  • The P1 also includes a built-in light level sensor, which you can use as a condition in automations — for example, only turn on lights if the room is dark.
  • If you experience false triggers, try lowering the sensitivity or repositioning the sensor away from heat sources.
  • Keep the sensor within Zigbee range of your hub for reliable communication.
