The Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E is a millimeter-wave radar presence detector that supports the Matter protocol, allowing it to connect directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or Amazon Alexa without requiring a separate Aqara Hub. Like the FP1, it detects human presence even when a person is completely still, making it far more accurate than traditional PIR motion sensors for occupancy-based automations.

What You Will Need

  • Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E
  • USB-C power cable and adapter (included)
  • A Matter-compatible smart home hub (Apple HomePod/Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, Samsung SmartThings hub, or Amazon Echo 4th gen or newer)
  • Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • Included mounting bracket and adhesive

Understanding Matter Connectivity

The FP1E uses the Matter over Wi-Fi protocol, which means it connects directly to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and communicates with your smart home platform without needing an Aqara Hub or Zigbee gateway. This simplifies setup and makes the sensor accessible to anyone with a Matter-compatible ecosystem.

Choosing the Right Location

The FP1E has a detection range of approximately 5 meters with a 120-degree field of view. Proper placement is critical:

  • Mount the sensor on a wall at 1.2 to 1.5 meters height, facing the main area where people sit or stand.
  • Aim the sensor toward seating areas like desks, couches, or dining tables for the most useful presence detection.
  • Avoid pointing the sensor at thin walls, glass doors, or windows — radar waves can penetrate these surfaces and detect people in adjacent rooms or outside.
  • Keep the sensor away from fans, moving curtains, or pet areas that may cause false readings.

Mounting and Powering the Sensor

  1. Attach the adhesive pad to the mounting bracket and press it firmly to the wall at your chosen location.
  2. Snap the FP1E onto the mounting bracket.
  3. Connect the USB-C power cable to the sensor and plug the adapter into a nearby outlet. The FP1E requires continuous power.
  4. Route the cable neatly along the wall to keep the installation tidy.

Pairing via Matter

You can pair the FP1E directly to your smart home platform or through the Aqara Home app:

Option 1: Direct Platform Pairing

  1. Open your smart home platform app (Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, or Alexa).
  2. Start the "Add Device" process.
  3. Scan the Matter QR code on the sensor or included documentation.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the sensor to your Wi-Fi network.
  5. Assign the sensor to a room and name it.

Option 2: Through the Aqara Home App

  1. Open the Aqara Home app and tap the + icon.
  2. Select Presence Sensor FP1E.
  3. Follow the setup prompts to connect via Wi-Fi.
  4. After setup, use the Matter sharing feature to add the sensor to your preferred platform.

Configuring Detection Settings

In the Aqara Home app (if paired through it) or your platform's settings, adjust these parameters:

  • Detection distance — Reduce the range if the sensor detects people through walls in adjacent rooms.
  • Sensitivity — Start at medium sensitivity and increase or decrease based on your experience with false positives or missed detections.
  • Presence timeout — Set how long after the last detected presence the sensor reports the room as empty. A shorter timeout saves energy but may falsely report an empty room if someone is very still.

Setting Up Presence Automations

Create automations in your smart home platform's app:

  • Apple Home — Create an automation triggered by the occupancy sensor. Turn on lights when presence is detected and off when no one is present.
  • Google Home — Use routines with the presence sensor as a starter to control lights, thermostats, and other devices.
  • SmartThings — Build routines that respond to occupancy state changes.

Practical automation ideas:

  • Turn on office lights when you sit at your desk and off only when you truly leave — no more lights shutting off during video calls.
  • Adjust HVAC based on room occupancy to save energy.
  • Turn off all electronics in a room when it has been vacant for 15 minutes.

FP1E vs. FP1 vs. FP2

  • The FP1E supports Matter (Wi-Fi) and does not require an Aqara Hub.
  • The FP1 uses Zigbee and requires an Aqara Hub but does not support Matter.
  • The FP2 connects via Wi-Fi, supports Matter, and offers multi-zone detection and people counting — features the FP1E does not have.

Tips

  • Allow 1 to 2 minutes after power-on for the sensor to calibrate. Stay out of the detection zone during this time for the best calibration.
  • If you experience false presence detection through walls, reduce the detection distance or reposition the sensor.
  • Keep the sensor firmware updated for improved detection accuracy.
  • The FP1E can be shared to multiple platforms simultaneously using Matter multi-admin, so you can use it with both Apple Home and Google Home at the same time.
