What's in the Box
The IKEA TRADFRI Motion Sensor includes the sensor unit, an adjustable mounting bracket with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. This compact, battery-powered motion sensor uses a passive infrared (PIR) element to detect movement and communicates over the Zigbee protocol with your IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway. It comes with two AAA batteries pre-installed and features an adjustable detection angle to help you fine-tune where it triggers.
Prerequisites
Before you begin installation, make sure you have:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, fully configured and connected to your network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your smartphone
- At least one IKEA smart bulb, plug, or other device paired to your hub that the motion sensor can trigger
- A planned mounting location — hallways, entryways, bathrooms, and staircases are ideal spots for motion-activated lighting
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the batteries. Open the back of the sensor and pull out the battery isolation tab. The two pre-installed AAA batteries will power on the sensor. You may see a brief LED flash confirming activation.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Select "Sensor" from the available device categories.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the motion sensor for approximately 10 seconds. The LED will begin pulsing, indicating the sensor is in discovery mode and ready to connect to your hub.
- Complete pairing. The IKEA Home Smart app will detect the sensor within seconds. Tap on it to finish pairing, then give it a name such as "Hallway Motion Sensor" and assign it to the correct room.
- Configure the trigger action. In the sensor's settings, select which lights or devices should activate when motion is detected. You can also set the duration that lights stay on after the last detected movement — options typically range from 1 to 10 minutes.
- Set daylight sensitivity. The TRADFRI Motion Sensor includes a built-in light level sensor. You can configure it to only trigger in darkness, preventing unnecessary activation during daytime. Adjust this setting in the app to match your preference.
- Mount the sensor. Attach the mounting bracket to the wall using the adhesive backing. Position the sensor at approximately knee to waist height for optimal detection of walking movement. The sensor sits on the bracket at an adjustable angle — tilt it to aim at the area where you want motion detected. A narrower angle detects motion across a smaller zone, while a wider angle covers more ground.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Through the Dirigera hub, the TRADFRI Motion Sensor's events can be used to trigger automations across your IKEA smart home ecosystem. While the sensor itself is not directly exposed to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa, the lights and devices it controls are visible in those platforms. For more advanced setups, Home Assistant users can access the sensor's motion detection events and light level readings through the Dirigera integration or Zigbee2MQTT. This enables custom automations like motion-triggered notifications, cameras, or multi-room lighting sequences that go beyond what the IKEA app alone supports.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the motion sensor is not triggering, check the batteries first — AAA batteries under constant PIR monitoring can drain faster than expected in high-traffic areas. If the sensor triggers inconsistently, verify that the daylight sensitivity setting is not preventing activation in your current lighting conditions. Reposition the sensor if it is detecting motion outside the intended zone or missing motion within it. For a factory reset, hold the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair through the app. Keep the sensor within Zigbee range of the hub or a nearby powered Zigbee device to maintain a reliable mesh connection. Avoid mounting the sensor near heat sources like radiators or direct sunlight, as these can cause false triggers with the PIR element.
