What's in the Box
The IKEA VALLHORN Motion Sensor comes with the sensor unit, a mounting bracket with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. The VALLHORN is IKEA's newer-generation motion sensor, using the Thread protocol with Matter support instead of the Zigbee-only TRADFRI Motion Sensor it replaces. It detects movement using a passive infrared (PIR) element and also includes a built-in ambient light sensor. The device is powered by two AAA batteries that come pre-installed and typically provide up to two years of use.
Prerequisites
Before installing the VALLHORN, confirm you have:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub — the VALLHORN requires the Dirigera for Thread connectivity and is not compatible with the older TRADFRI Gateway
- The IKEA Home Smart app (version 1.20 or later) installed on your smartphone
- At least one IKEA smart device (bulb, plug, blind, or speaker) already paired to your hub for the sensor to trigger
- A planned mounting location — hallways, staircases, entryways, and bathrooms are the most popular spots for motion-activated automation
Step-by-Step Setup
- Activate the batteries. Open the back of the sensor and pull out the plastic battery isolation tab to activate the two pre-installed AAA batteries. A brief LED flash may confirm the sensor is powered on.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device and select "Sensor" from the device categories.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the VALLHORN for approximately 10 seconds. The front LED will begin pulsing, indicating the sensor is broadcasting its Thread signal and ready for discovery.
- Complete pairing. The app should detect the VALLHORN within a few seconds. Tap to confirm the connection, name the sensor (e.g., "Hallway Motion"), and assign it to the correct room.
- Set up automations. In the sensor's settings, configure what should happen when motion is detected. Select which lights should turn on, which plugs should activate, or which scene should trigger. Set the timeout duration for how long lights stay on after the last detected motion — typically between 1 and 10 minutes.
- Configure light sensitivity. The VALLHORN includes an ambient light sensor so it can be set to trigger only when the room is dark. Adjust this threshold in the app to prevent unnecessary activation during daylight hours, which also extends battery life.
- Mount the sensor. Attach the mounting bracket to the wall using the adhesive backing. Position the sensor at knee to waist height for optimal detection of people walking by. The sensor attaches to the bracket with a tilting mechanism that lets you aim the detection cone toward the area you want covered. Press the adhesive firmly and wait at least 30 seconds before attaching the sensor.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The VALLHORN's Thread connectivity provides lower latency than older Zigbee sensors, meaning lights respond more quickly when motion is detected. Because it supports Matter through the Dirigera hub, the sensor's motion status can be exposed to Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. This enables native automations — for example, an Apple Home automation that turns on the bathroom light when motion is detected after sunset. Home Assistant users can access the VALLHORN through the Dirigera integration for advanced automations like triggering cameras, sending notifications, or adjusting thermostats based on room occupancy.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the VALLHORN does not trigger lights reliably, first check the ambient light setting — if set to "only in darkness," it may not activate in partially lit rooms. Adjust the sensitivity threshold or set it to trigger regardless of light level for testing. If the sensor misses motion, reposition it to face the primary walking path directly rather than from the side, as PIR sensors are most sensitive to movement crossing their field of view rather than approaching head-on. Replace the AAA batteries if the sensor has been in use for over a year. For a factory reset, press and hold the pairing button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair through the IKEA Home Smart app. Avoid placing the sensor near heat sources or in direct sunlight, as thermal interference can cause false positives or missed detections.
