Common Causes
- Battery is low or dead
- The magnet and sensor are too far apart or misaligned
- The sensor has lost its Zigbee pairing with the hub
- The adhesive has weakened and the sensor or magnet has shifted position
- Hub is offline or out of Zigbee range
- Automations triggered by the sensor are misconfigured
Fix 1: Check the Gap Between Sensor and Magnet
The Aqara Door and Window Sensor uses a magnetic reed switch. The sensor body and its companion magnet must be mounted close together, with the gap no larger than 22mm (about 7/8 inch) when the door or window is closed.
- Close the door or window and inspect the gap between the sensor and the magnet. If the gap is larger than about 20mm, the sensor will not detect the closed state.
- If the adhesive has loosened and either piece has shifted, remove both pieces, clean the surfaces, and reattach them with fresh adhesive or the included double-sided tape.
- Align the marked sides of the sensor and magnet so they face each other directly. Most Aqara sensors have a small line or arrow indicating the alignment edge.
- After repositioning, open and close the door or window several times and verify the status updates in the Aqara Home app.
Fix 2: Replace the Battery
- Remove the sensor from the door or window frame.
- Use a coin or small flathead tool to twist open the battery cover on the back of the sensor.
- Replace the CR1632 battery (some models use CR2032 — check the existing battery) with a fresh one. Ensure the positive (+) side faces up.
- Close the cover and remount the sensor. The LED should blink once when you insert the battery, confirming power.
- Open and close the door to test. The sensor should report the state change within a second or two in the app.
Fix 3: Verify the Hub Is Online
The Aqara Door and Window Sensor communicates over Zigbee and requires a working Aqara hub.
- Open the Aqara Home app and check your hub's status. If the hub is offline, all Zigbee sensors will stop reporting.
- Restart the hub by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
- Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the hub and sensors to reconnect. The door sensor should come back online automatically.
Fix 4: Re-Pair the Sensor
If the sensor shows as offline in the app even after restarting the hub and replacing the battery:
- Remove the sensor from the Aqara Home app (device page > Settings > Remove Device).
- On the sensor, press and hold the small reset button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes three times rapidly.
- In the app, tap + and select Add Accessory. Choose the Door and Window Sensor.
- Press the reset button once to put the sensor in pairing mode. Hold it within 1 to 2 meters of the hub during pairing.
- Once paired, assign it to the correct room and test by opening and closing the door.
- Recreate any automations that were linked to the sensor (such as turning on lights when a door opens).
Fix 5: Check Automations
If the sensor correctly shows open and closed states in the app but your automations are not firing:
- Go to Automations in the Aqara Home app.
- Find the automation linked to the door sensor and verify:
- The trigger condition matches the event you expect (e.g., "Door opened" vs. "Door closed").
- The target device is online and responsive.
- The automation is enabled.
- Test the target device directly from the app to confirm it works.
- If the automation seems correct but does not trigger, delete it and create a fresh one.
Fix 6: Improve Zigbee Range
If the sensor is mounted on a door far from the hub and intermittently fails to report:
- Add a powered Zigbee device (such as an Aqara Smart Plug) between the hub and the sensor to strengthen the mesh network.
- Avoid mounting the hub or sensors near large metal objects, thick concrete walls, or inside enclosed metal cabinets.
- After adding mesh devices, restart the hub to force a Zigbee network reorganization.
When to Contact Support
If the sensor does not respond at all after a battery replacement and factory reset (10-second reset button hold), the sensor may have a hardware defect. Contact Aqara Support for warranty replacement.
