Google Nest Hub displays can sometimes freeze, become unresponsive, or get stuck on the boot screen with the Google logo. These issues can be caused by software updates, firmware glitches, or hardware problems. Here is how to get your Nest Hub working again.

Common Causes

  • Failed software update - Updates can sometimes fail and leave the device in a bad state
  • Firmware glitch - Random software bugs can cause freezing
  • Memory issues - Too many linked services or cached data
  • Power supply problems - Inconsistent power can cause boot issues
  • Hardware failure - In rare cases, the display may have a hardware defect

How to Fix It

Step 1: Power Cycle

Start with a simple power cycle:

  1. Unplug the power cable from your Nest Hub
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds (a full minute is better)
  3. Plug the power cable back in
  4. Wait patiently for several minutes for it to boot

Step 2: Recovery Mode Reset

If a power cycle does not work, try a recovery mode reset:

  1. Locate the volume up and volume down buttons on the back of your Nest Hub
  2. Unplug the power cable
  3. Press and hold both volume buttons at the same time
  4. While holding both buttons, plug the power cable back in
  5. Keep holding until you see the Google logo appear
  6. Release the buttons and wait for the device to boot

Step 3: The Repeated Power Cycle Method

Some users report success with repeated power cycles:

  1. Unplug the power cord and wait 10 seconds
  2. Plug it back in and wait for the G logo to appear
  3. Repeat this process 10 more times (11 total cycles)
  4. After the 11th cycle, let the device fully boot

Step 4: Factory Reset from Google Home App

If you can access your Nest Hub through the Google Home app:

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. Tap and hold your Nest Hub device
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  4. Scroll down and tap Remove device
  5. Confirm the factory reset
  6. Set up the device again as new

Step 5: Clear Connected App Caches

Before setting up again, clear caches of any apps that were connected to your Nest Hub. Also unlink any services you do not actively use to reduce potential conflicts.

Update-Related Issues

If your Nest Hub is stuck on an update screen showing 99% progress, this is a known issue that Google typically resolves with server-side fixes. The device may still respond to voice commands even with the frozen screen. Wait for Google to push a fix, or try the recovery mode reset.

When to Contact Google Support

If none of these solutions work after multiple attempts, your Nest Hub may have a hardware issue. Contact Google support for warranty replacement options.
