Understanding the Issue

The Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) can occasionally freeze, become unresponsive to touch or voice commands, or get stuck on the Google logo during boot. These issues are typically caused by software glitches, insufficient power, network problems, or corrupted firmware.

Common Causes

  • A software glitch causing the display to freeze or become unresponsive
  • The power adapter is not providing adequate power or is faulty
  • The device is stuck in a boot loop due to a failed firmware update
  • Wi-Fi connectivity issues preventing the device from completing startup
  • A corrupted system file from a power interruption during an update
  • Overheating due to poor ventilation or direct sunlight exposure

Step 1: Force Restart the Nest Hub

  1. If the screen is frozen or unresponsive to touch, try a force restart.
  2. Press and hold the volume up and volume down buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds.
  3. The Nest Hub will restart. Wait two to three minutes for it to fully boot and reconnect.
  4. If the buttons do not respond, unplug the power cable from the back of the Nest Hub, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

Step 2: Check the Power Supply

  1. Ensure you are using the original power adapter that came with the Nest Hub. Third-party adapters may not provide the correct voltage or amperage.
  2. Try plugging the adapter into a different wall outlet to rule out a faulty outlet.
  3. Inspect the power cable for damage — look for fraying, kinks, or a loose connection where the cable meets the Nest Hub.
  4. If the power cable is damaged, contact Google support for a replacement. Using an incompatible cable can cause boot failures and freezing.

Step 3: Let the Device Cool Down

  1. If the Nest Hub feels warm or hot to the touch, it may have overheated and shut down or frozen as a safety measure.
  2. Unplug the device and move it to a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and other electronics that generate heat.
  3. Wait 15 to 20 minutes for the device to cool down completely.
  4. Plug it back in and check if it boots normally.

Step 4: Check for Firmware Update Issues

  1. If the Nest Hub is stuck on the Google logo or "G" boot screen, it may be in the middle of a firmware update or a failed update has corrupted the boot process.
  2. Leave the device plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi for up to 30 minutes. Some updates take time to download and install, especially after a factory reset.
  3. If the device remains stuck after 30 minutes, proceed to a factory reset (Step 6).

Step 5: Check Wi-Fi Connectivity

  1. If the Nest Hub boots but gets stuck or behaves erratically, your Wi-Fi network may be the issue.
  2. Restart your Wi-Fi router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
  3. Move the Nest Hub closer to the router if possible to ensure a strong Wi-Fi signal.
  4. If your router recently changed settings or password, the Nest Hub may fail to connect. A factory reset will allow you to enter the new Wi-Fi credentials during setup.

Step 6: Factory Reset the Nest Hub

  1. If the device is accessible, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Settings, then Device options > Factory reset.
  2. If the screen is unresponsive, press and hold the volume up button for 10 seconds while the device is powered on. This triggers a hardware factory reset on the 2nd Gen model.
  3. Alternatively, unplug the Nest Hub, then press and hold the volume up button while plugging it back in. Continue holding until the screen shows a factory reset confirmation.
  4. After the reset, the Nest Hub will restart and display the initial setup screen. Set it up again using the Google Home app.

Step 7: Re-Set Up After Reset

  1. Open the Google Home app, tap +, then Set up device > New device.
  2. The app will detect the Nest Hub. Follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi, sign in with your Google account, and configure your preferences.
  3. Restore your display settings (photo frame, clock, ambient EQ) and smart home device configuration.
  4. Allow the Nest Hub to download any available firmware updates before relying on it for daily use.

Additional Tips

  • Regular firmware updates are installed automatically. Avoid unplugging the Nest Hub during updates — unexpected power loss during an update is a common cause of boot loops.
  • If the Nest Hub repeatedly freezes after a factory reset, the hardware may be defective. Contact Google support for warranty replacement options.
  • Placing the Nest Hub on a hard, flat surface with clearance around the back allows for proper ventilation and reduces the risk of overheating.
