Understanding the Issue

The Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) is a compact smart speaker with Google Assistant built in. When the device stops responding to voice commands, touch controls, or fails to play audio, the issue is usually related to the microphone switch, Wi-Fi connectivity, power, or a software glitch.

Common Causes

  • The microphone is turned off via the hardware switch on the side
  • Wi-Fi connection has been lost
  • The power adapter or USB-C cable is faulty or disconnected
  • A software glitch has caused the device to freeze
  • The Google account is not linked or has an issue
  • The device is too far from the Wi-Fi router
  • The "Hey Google" wake word detection is disabled

Step 1: Check the Microphone

  1. Locate the microphone on/off switch on the side of the Nest Mini.
  2. When the microphone is off, the four LEDs on top will glow orange and the speaker will not respond to "Hey Google."
  3. Slide the switch to turn the microphone back on. The orange lights will turn off.
  4. Test by saying "Hey Google, are you there?" and wait for a response.

Step 2: Verify Power Connection

  1. Check that the USB-C power cable is securely connected to the back of the Nest Mini and the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
  2. When powered on, the four white LEDs on top should briefly light up.
  3. Try a different wall outlet. If the Nest Mini does not power on at all, the power adapter may be faulty.
  4. Do not use a phone charger or computer USB port — the Nest Mini requires its included 15W power adapter for proper operation.

Step 3: Check Wi-Fi Connection

  1. Open the Google Home app on your phone and look for the Nest Mini in your device list.
  2. If it shows Offline, the speaker has lost its network connection.
  3. Ensure your Wi-Fi router is functioning by testing with another device.
  4. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
  5. If you changed your Wi-Fi network name or password, the Nest Mini will need to be reset and set up again with the new credentials.
  6. Place the Nest Mini within reasonable range of your router — its small speaker is usually placed in close quarters, so Wi-Fi range is typically not an issue unless the router is in a distant part of the house.

Step 4: Restart the Nest Mini

  1. Unplug the power cable from the Nest Mini.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and wait about one minute for the device to boot and reconnect.
  4. The four LEDs on top will pulse white during startup. Once they turn off, the device is ready.
  5. Test voice commands again.

Step 5: Check Google Account and Settings

  1. In the Google Home app, tap on the Nest Mini and verify it is linked to the correct Google account.
  2. Go to Settings > Google Assistant > Voice Match and ensure your voice profile is configured.
  3. Check that the default music service is linked under Settings > Music.
  4. If "Hey Google" detection seems unreliable, go to the device settings and check that the sensitivity for "Hey Google" is set to a reasonable level (not too low).

Step 6: Use Touch Controls

  1. If voice is not working but the device is powered on, try using touch controls on the top of the Nest Mini.
  2. Tap the center to pause or resume media playback.
  3. Tap the left side to decrease volume and the right side to increase volume.
  4. If touch controls work but voice does not, the microphone may be malfunctioning or the "Hey Google" detection needs to be retrained.

Step 7: Factory Reset

  1. If the Nest Mini remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset.
  2. Turn the device upside down and press and hold the factory reset button (the small circle area near the power cable) for about 15 seconds.
  3. The Assistant will announce that it is resetting. Wait for the reset to complete.
  4. Set up the Nest Mini again in the Google Home app as a new device.

Additional Tips

  • The Nest Mini can be wall-mounted using the built-in screw slot on the back. Ensure the mounting screw is secure and the power cable reaches an outlet.
  • If the speaker works intermittently, check for interference from other devices on the same Wi-Fi channel. Switching your router to a less congested channel may help.
  • The Nest Mini does not have a 3.5mm jack (unlike the original Google Home Mini). Audio is played through its built-in speaker or via Chromecast groups only.
