Identifying the Issue

If your IKEA RODRET Dimmer is not working, you may notice that pressing the buttons produces no response from paired lights, the dimmer fails to pair with your Dirigera hub, brightness adjustments are erratic, or the device appears completely unresponsive. The RODRET is a simple two-button Zigbee dimmer designed for basic on/off and brightness control of IKEA smart lights. It connects through the IKEA Dirigera hub or the older TRADFRI gateway.

Common Causes

  • Dead or low battery — The RODRET uses a CR2032 coin cell battery, and a depleted battery is the single most common cause of dimmer failure
  • Lost pairing — Hub firmware updates, power outages, or accidental resets can cause the RODRET to lose its connection to the hub
  • No device assignment — The dimmer may be paired to the hub but not assigned to any light or group, so button presses go nowhere
  • Zigbee range limitations — If the RODRET is far from the hub and there are no Zigbee repeater devices in between, commands may not reach the hub reliably
  • Interference from other wireless devices — Wi-Fi routers, baby monitors, and other 2.4 GHz devices can interfere with the Zigbee signal

Step-by-Step Fixes

  1. Replace the battery. Pry open the back cover of the RODRET and replace the CR2032 coin cell with a fresh one. Even batteries that are only a year old may be too depleted for reliable Zigbee communication.
  2. Factory reset the dimmer. With a fresh battery installed, press and hold the small pairing button on the back of the RODRET for at least 10 seconds. The LED on the front will flash to confirm the device has been reset to factory defaults.
  3. Re-pair to the hub. Open the IKEA Home Smart app, tap the + icon, and select the remote or dimmer device category. Press the pairing button on the RODRET once to put it into discovery mode. The app will detect it and guide you through the pairing process.
  4. Assign lights to the dimmer. Navigate to the RODRET's settings in the IKEA Home Smart app and assign it to the specific light or group of lights you want it to control. The top button will act as on/brighten and the bottom button as off/dim.
  5. Improve Zigbee coverage. If the dimmer works near the hub but not in its intended location, place a TRADFRI signal repeater or an always-on IKEA smart plug in an outlet between the hub and the dimmer to extend the Zigbee mesh network.
  6. Check for firmware updates. In the IKEA Home Smart app, look for available firmware updates for the RODRET. Updating can fix communication bugs and improve overall responsiveness.

When to Contact Support

If the RODRET does not flash its LED during a factory reset even with a brand-new battery, or if it pairs successfully but never controls any assigned device despite being close to the hub, the device may be defective. Reach out to IKEA customer support with your proof of purchase to arrange a replacement under warranty.

Prevention Tips

Keep spare CR2032 batteries available and replace them proactively once a year rather than waiting for complete failure. Mount the RODRET on a wall or surface away from metal objects that can block Zigbee signals. Maintain a healthy Zigbee mesh by keeping powered IKEA devices (smart bulbs, plugs, signal repeaters) distributed throughout your home. Check the IKEA Home Smart app periodically for firmware updates on all your devices to ensure the best compatibility and reliability.
