iRobot Roomba robot vacuums use WiFi connectivity and smart navigation. This guide covers common connectivity and operation issues.
Roomba Won't Connect to WiFi
Initial setup problems:
- 2.4GHz only: Most Roombas only connect to 2.4GHz WiFi networks
- iRobot Home app: Must use iRobot Home app (not older iRobot app)
- Roomba near router: Place Roomba on dock near router during setup
- Hold buttons: Press and hold Home + Spot buttons until tone plays
- Factory reset: Hold Clean for 20 seconds until light ring swirls
Roomba Gets Stuck or Lost
Navigation problems:
- Cliff sensors: Clean cliff sensors on bottom - dust causes false readings
- Dark floors: Very dark floors may trigger cliff sensors
- Clear obstacles: Pick up cords, small objects, and loose rugs
- Room lighting: Some models navigate better with adequate lighting
- Virtual walls: Use barriers to block problem areas
- Remap: Delete and recreate smart maps if navigation degraded
Roomba Won't Dock or Charge
Charging issues:
- Clean contacts: Wipe charging contacts on Roomba and dock
- Dock placement: Place dock against wall with 1.5 feet clear on sides, 4 feet in front
- Flat surface: Dock must be on flat, hard surface
- Line of sight: Roomba needs clear path to see dock
- Battery replacement: Old batteries may not hold charge - replace if needed
Voice Control Issues
Alexa and Google integration:
- Link account: Connect iRobot account in Alexa or Google Home app
- Roomba name: Give Roomba a simple name like "vacuum"
- Commands: "Ask Roomba to start cleaning", "Tell Roomba to go home"
- Re-link: If commands fail, disconnect and reconnect the skill
Home Assistant Integration
For HA users:
- iRobot integration: Official integration available using iRobot account
- Local control: Some models support local MQTT control (Dorita980)
- Entities: Vacuum entity with start, stop, dock, locate commands
- Automations: Schedule based on presence, time, or other triggers
