Identifying the Issue
If your IKEA STYRBAR Remote Control is not controlling lights or other devices as expected, you may notice that button presses produce no response, the remote cannot pair with your hub, lights it previously controlled no longer react, or brightness and color temperature adjustments do not work. The STYRBAR is a four-button Zigbee remote with on/off, brightness, and directional controls. It pairs through the IKEA Dirigera hub or the older TRADFRI gateway to control smart lights, blinds, or sound remotes.
Common Causes
- Depleted battery — The STYRBAR uses two AAA batteries, and a low charge can cause intermittent or complete loss of function
- Unpairing from the hub — Firmware updates, hub resets, or network changes can break the connection between the remote and the hub
- Device assignment lost — The remote may still be paired to the hub but no longer assigned to control a specific light or group
- Zigbee interference — Strong 2.4 GHz interference from nearby Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, or other Zigbee networks can disrupt communication
- Wrong pairing mode — The STYRBAR can pair directly to a light (bypassing the hub) or to the hub itself, and using the wrong method can result in limited or no control
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Replace the batteries. Open the battery compartment on the back of the STYRBAR and install two fresh AAA batteries. Even if the batteries are not completely dead, low voltage can cause unreliable Zigbee communication.
- Factory reset the remote. Press and hold the small pairing button (located near the battery compartment) for at least 10 seconds. The LED on the front of the remote will flash red then turn off, indicating a successful reset.
- Re-pair to the Dirigera hub. Open the IKEA Home Smart app and tap + to add a new device. Select the remote control category and follow the on-screen prompts. Press the pairing button on the STYRBAR once — the LED will pulse and the app should detect it within 30 seconds.
- Assign the remote to devices. After pairing, go to the STYRBAR settings in the app and assign it to the specific lights, light groups, or blinds you want it to control. Configure what each button does — the left and right arrows can switch between scenes or adjust color temperature depending on your setup.
- Test in close proximity. Stand near the Dirigera hub and press buttons on the STYRBAR. If it works at close range but not from the remote's normal location, you have a Zigbee range problem. Add a signal repeater or powered Zigbee device between the hub and the remote's intended position.
- Update firmware. Check the STYRBAR for available firmware updates in the IKEA Home Smart app settings. Newer firmware versions improve Zigbee reliability and may resolve pairing quirks.
When to Contact Support
If the STYRBAR LED does not flash at all during a factory reset attempt, even with fresh batteries installed, the remote may have a hardware failure. Contact IKEA customer support for warranty replacement. Keep your receipt or order confirmation handy when reaching out.
Prevention Tips
Store spare AAA batteries nearby so you can swap them at the first sign of sluggish response. Avoid mounting the STYRBAR directly on a metal surface, as metal can interfere with Zigbee signal propagation — use the included adhesive plate on a wall or wooden surface instead. Keep the IKEA Home Smart app and all device firmware up to date, as IKEA frequently issues stability patches. When adding new smart lights to your home, remember to update the STYRBAR's device assignments to include them if desired.
