Common Causes
When a Philips Hue Motion Sensor stops detecting movement or fails to trigger lights, the issue is usually related to placement, settings, battery, or connectivity. Here are the most common causes:
- The battery is low or dead.
- The daylight sensitivity setting is preventing the sensor from triggering because it detects enough ambient light.
- The sensor is aimed in the wrong direction or mounted at an incorrect height.
- The sensor is outside the Zigbee range of the Hue Bridge mesh network.
- The turn-off timer is set too short, making it seem like the sensor is not working.
- The sensor's PIR detection zone is blocked or obstructed.
- Firmware on the Bridge or sensor is outdated.
Step 1: Check the Battery
Open the back of the motion sensor and inspect the batteries. The indoor Hue Motion Sensor uses two AAA batteries, while the Outdoor Motion Sensor uses two AA batteries. Replace them with fresh batteries even if the Hue app shows the battery level as adequate, since the app's battery estimate is not always precise. After replacing the batteries, wait 30 seconds and then walk through the detection zone to test.
Step 2: Review the Daylight Sensitivity Setting
The Hue Motion Sensor includes a built-in ambient light sensor that can prevent the lights from triggering when there is sufficient natural light in the room. This is a common cause of the "sensor not working" perception during daytime:
- Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Accessories.
- Tap the Motion Sensor.
- Look for the Daylight Sensitivity or Light Level setting.
- Set it to "At any time" or reduce the light threshold so the sensor triggers even in bright conditions.
- If you want the sensor to only activate in the dark, adjust the slider to find the right threshold for your room.
Step 3: Check Sensor Placement and Angle
The Hue Motion Sensor uses a passive infrared (PIR) detector that senses body heat from moving people. For it to work effectively:
- Mount the sensor at a height of 5 to 7 feet from the floor (indoor) or 6 to 8 feet (outdoor).
- Aim the sensor so it faces the area where people enter the room, typically toward the doorway or main traffic path.
- PIR sensors detect motion best when a person walks across the detection field rather than directly toward it. If the sensor is aimed straight at a doorway, a person walking directly toward it may not trigger the sensor as reliably as someone walking past.
- Adjust the sensor angle using the magnetic ball joint to tilt it toward the desired detection zone.
Step 4: Remove Obstructions and Interference Sources
Check for anything that might interfere with the PIR sensor:
- Physical obstructions: Furniture, curtains, or decorations placed in front of the sensor after initial installation.
- Heat sources: Radiators, heating vents, space heaters, or direct sunlight hitting the sensor can cause false triggers or desensitize it. Move the sensor away from heat sources.
- Glass doors or windows: PIR sensors cannot detect motion through glass. If the sensor faces a glass door, it will not see people approaching from outside.
Step 5: Review Trigger Rules and Timer
In the Hue app, check the sensor's automation settings:
- Turn-off timer: If set to 1 minute, the lights may turn off before you notice they were triggered. Increase the timer to at least 5 minutes for most rooms.
- Time-based rules: If you configured the sensor to only work during certain hours, verify the time window is correct. A sensor set to work from 6 PM to 11 PM will not trigger at midnight.
- Assigned lights: Confirm the sensor is still assigned to the correct room and lights. If lights were removed or renamed, the automation may have broken.
Step 6: Restart the Bridge and Sensor
- Unplug the Hue Bridge, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Remove the batteries from the motion sensor, wait 10 seconds, and reinsert them.
- Wait 60 seconds for both to reconnect.
- Walk through the detection zone to test.
Step 7: Re-Pair or Factory Reset
If the sensor is still not working, try removing it from the app and re-pairing it:
- Go to Settings, then Accessories.
- Tap the motion sensor and select Delete.
- Remove and reinsert the batteries.
- Go back to Add Accessory and re-pair the sensor.
- Reconfigure all motion rules, daylight settings, and room assignments.
To factory reset the sensor, press and hold the setup button on the back for about 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly, then release and re-pair.
When to Contact Support
If the motion sensor LED does not light up at all after a battery replacement, or if it consistently fails to detect motion from any direction and at any distance after following all the above steps, the PIR sensor may have a hardware defect. Contact Philips Hue Support for warranty evaluation.
