Common Causes
If your Ring Alarm Contact Sensor (2nd Gen) is not pairing with the Base Station or is not detecting when doors or windows open and close, the issue typically falls into one of these categories:
- Battery depleted or improperly seated — the sensor cannot pair or communicate without power
- Sensor out of Z-Wave range from the Ring Alarm Base Station
- Magnet misaligned — the sensor body and magnet are too far apart or not properly aligned
- Base Station offline — the sensor cannot pair if the Base Station is disconnected
- Sensor already paired to a different Base Station or account
- Z-Wave interference from other wireless devices
- Adhesive failure — the sensor or magnet has shifted or fallen from its mounting position
Fixing Pairing Issues
Step 1: Verify the Base Station is Online
- Open the Ring app and check that your Ring Alarm Base Station shows as Online.
- If the Base Station is offline, ensure its Ethernet cable is securely connected to your router and the power adapter is plugged in.
- Restart the Base Station by unplugging the power, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in. Wait two to three minutes for it to fully restart.
Step 2: Check and Reset the Battery
- Open the contact sensor by pressing the release tab on the back and separating the cover.
- Remove the CR2032 battery and inspect it. Ensure there is no plastic tab still blocking the battery contacts.
- Wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
- The LED should flash briefly when the battery makes contact. If it does not flash, try a new CR2032 battery.
Step 3: Bring the Sensor Close to the Base Station
- During the pairing process, bring the contact sensor within three to five feet of the Base Station.
- Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device, then select Security Devices and Contact Sensor.
- Press the pairing button on the side of the sensor when prompted.
- Wait up to 60 seconds for the Base Station to discover the sensor via Z-Wave.
- Once paired, you can move the sensor to its final mounting location.
Step 4: Remove and Re-Add the Sensor
If the sensor was previously paired and is now unresponsive:
- In the Ring app, go to Devices and select the contact sensor.
- Tap the gear icon, then Remove Device.
- Remove the battery from the sensor, wait 10 seconds, and reinsert it.
- Set up the sensor again as a new device in the Ring app.
Fixing Detection Issues
Step 5: Check Sensor and Magnet Alignment
- With the door or window closed, check that the sensor body and magnet are within one inch of each other.
- The alignment marks on the sensor body and magnet should line up when the door or window is closed.
- If either piece has shifted, reposition it. Remove the old adhesive, clean the surface, and apply a new adhesive strip.
- If the gap between the two pieces is slightly more than one inch due to the door or window frame design, you may need to add a spacer (such as a small piece of foam tape) to bring the magnet closer to the sensor.
Step 6: Test the Sensor
- In the Ring app, go to Devices and select the contact sensor.
- Close the door or window and verify the app shows Closed.
- Open the door or window and verify the status changes to Open.
- If the sensor does not respond, check the signal strength in Device Health. If it is weak, add a Ring Alarm Range Extender between the Base Station and the sensor.
Step 7: Check for Environmental Interference
- Large metal objects near the sensor (such as metal door frames or reinforced doors) can interfere with the magnet's field and cause missed detections.
- Other Z-Wave devices on the same frequency can occasionally cause interference. Check if nearby sensors are also experiencing issues.
When to Contact Ring Support
- If the sensor will not pair despite fresh batteries and close proximity to the Base Station, the sensor may be defective.
- If the sensor pairs but consistently reports incorrect open/close states despite proper alignment, it may need replacement.
- Contact Ring Support through the Ring app or at ring.com/support.
