Common Causes

If your Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor (2024 model) is not pairing with your SmartThings Hub or is failing to detect motion, the issue typically comes from one of these causes:

  • Dead or improperly seated battery — the sensor needs a functioning battery to pair and operate
  • SmartThings Hub offline — the sensor cannot pair if the hub is disconnected
  • Sensor out of Zigbee range — too far from the hub or the nearest Zigbee repeater
  • Sensor stuck in a previous pairing — it may still be registered to a different hub or account
  • Motion sensitivity too low — the sensor may not trigger on distant or slow-moving activity
  • Environmental interference — heat sources, direct sunlight, or HVAC airflow causing false readings or masking real motion
  • Zigbee channel congestion — interference from other Zigbee devices or WiFi on overlapping channels

Fixing Pairing Issues

Step 1: Verify the SmartThings Hub is Online

  1. Open the SmartThings app and check that your hub shows as Online with a solid green LED.
  2. If the hub is offline, unplug its power and Ethernet cables, wait 60 seconds, reconnect everything, and wait three to five minutes for it to restart.
  3. The hub must be online and connected to the internet before you can pair new devices.

Step 2: Check and Reset the Battery

  1. Open the battery compartment on the back of the motion sensor.
  2. Remove the CR2450 battery.
  3. Inspect the battery for corrosion or damage. If the battery looks worn, replace it with a fresh CR2450.
  4. Wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  5. The LED should flash when the battery is inserted, confirming the sensor has power.

Step 3: Reset and Re-Pair the Sensor

  1. If the sensor was previously paired to a different hub or account, it must be factory reset first.
  2. Use a pin or paperclip to press and hold the reset button (small pinhole on the back) for five to ten seconds until the LED flashes rapidly.
  3. Release the button. The sensor is now in pairing mode.
  4. In the SmartThings app, tap +, then Add Device, select SmartThings and Motion Sensor.
  5. Choose your hub and wait for the sensor to be discovered.
  6. Bring the sensor within three to five feet of the hub during pairing for the most reliable connection.

Step 4: Remove and Re-Add in the App

If the sensor appears in the app but is unresponsive:

  1. In the SmartThings app, go to Devices and select the motion sensor.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu and select Delete or Remove Device.
  3. Factory reset the sensor as described above.
  4. Add it again as a new device.
  5. Note that any automations referencing this sensor will need to be recreated.

Fixing Motion Detection Issues

Step 5: Check Sensor Placement

  1. The PIR motion sensor detects movement best when people walk across its field of view, not directly toward or away from it.
  2. Mount the sensor at approximately seven to eight feet above the floor in a corner for maximum coverage.
  3. Ensure the sensor lens is not blocked by objects, covered in dust, or obstructed by furniture.
  4. Move the sensor away from heat sources (heaters, radiators, sunny windows) that can mask or mimic body heat and cause missed detections or false triggers.

Step 6: Check Automations and Settings

  1. Verify the sensor's status is updating in the SmartThings app. Walk in front of the sensor and check if the status changes to Motion Detected.
  2. If the sensor detects motion but your automations are not triggering, review the automation settings. The condition or trigger may be misconfigured.
  3. Check if SmartThings Home Monitor is set to the correct mode. If the system is in Disarmed mode, security-related automations may not fire.
  4. After motion is detected, the sensor has a cooldown period (usually 30 to 60 seconds) before it can detect motion again. This is normal behavior.

Step 7: Strengthen the Zigbee Network

  • If the sensor is far from the hub, add Zigbee repeater devices (such as SmartThings smart plugs) between the hub and the sensor to extend the mesh network.
  • Minimize WiFi interference by ensuring your router's WiFi channels do not overlap with Zigbee channel 15 (which uses the 2.4 GHz band near WiFi channels 1 and 6). Switching your WiFi to a different channel may help.

When to Contact Samsung Support

  • If the sensor will not pair with any hub despite fresh batteries and a factory reset, the Zigbee radio may be defective.
  • If the sensor pairs but never reports motion despite correct placement, the PIR sensor element may be faulty.
  • Contact Samsung SmartThings Support through the SmartThings app or at smartthings.com/support for warranty assistance.
