Smart garage controllers add WiFi connectivity to existing garage door openers. This guide covers common issues.

Controller Won't Connect to WiFi

Setup issues:

  • Manufacturer app: Use specific app (myQ, Meross, Tailwind, etc.)
  • 2.4GHz only: Most garage controllers only support 2.4GHz
  • Garage WiFi: Signal often weak in garage - may need extender
  • LED status: Check LED for connection status indication
  • Reset: Factory reset and re-setup

Door Won't Open/Close

Control issues:

  • Wiring: Verify wiring to garage door opener terminals
  • Learn button: May need to program with opener learn button
  • Safety sensors: Check opener safety sensors are aligned
  • Opener compatibility: Verify opener brand/model is supported
  • Manual works: Test that wall button and remote work

Status Shows Incorrect

When door state doesn't match reality:

  • Sensor placement: Tilt sensor or door sensor misaligned
  • Sensor battery: Replace sensor battery if wireless
  • Magnet distance: Adjust magnet distance for proper detection
  • Calibrate: Some controllers need open/close calibration

myQ Specific Issues

For Chamberlain/LiftMaster myQ:

  • API changes: myQ has restricted third-party access
  • HomeKit: Requires separate myQ Home Bridge
  • ratgdo: Consider ratgdo for local HomeKit/HA control
  • Key by Amazon: Alternative for Amazon integration

Meross/Tailwind Issues

Alternative controller brands:

  • Meross: Works with HomeKit directly, no extra bridge
  • Tailwind: Vehicle detection feature available
  • Local control: Some support local API for Home Assistant

Safety Considerations

Garage door safety:

  • Auto-close: Use with caution - ensure area is clear
  • Notifications: Get alerts if door left open
  • Geofencing: Auto-close when leaving home
  • Guest access: Share access securely through app
