What You Will Need

  • Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1
  • An Aqara Zigbee hub (Hub M2, Hub M3, or Camera Hub G3)
  • Aqara Home app (iOS or Android)
  • Existing roller shade with a beaded chain (compatible with most standard roller blinds)
  • USB-C cable and power adapter (included) or Aqara Solar Panel (sold separately)
  • 2.4 GHz WiFi network (for the hub)

Step 1: Check Shade Compatibility

The Roller Shade Driver E1 works with most standard roller shades that use a beaded ball chain. Before installation, confirm your shade chain uses either 3mm or 4mm beads. The driver ships with adapters for both sizes. Remove any existing chain tensioner or guide from the wall, as the driver will replace it.

Step 2: Mount the Driver

  1. Identify which side of your roller shade the bead chain hangs on.
  2. Hold the Roller Shade Driver E1 against the wall next to your window frame, aligning the chain slot with the bead chain.
  3. Use the included adhesive mounting plate or screws to secure the driver to the wall. For heavier shades, screw mounting is recommended.
  4. Thread the bead chain through the driver's chain slot, ensuring it sits snugly on the internal gear. Use the correct bead-size adapter if needed.
  5. Gently pull the chain manually to verify it moves smoothly through the driver without catching.

Step 3: Power the Driver

Connect the included USB-C cable to the charging port on the bottom of the driver. Plug the other end into a USB power adapter or an Aqara Solar Panel for continuous charging. The built-in battery provides backup power, but a constant power source is recommended for daily use. The LED indicator on the driver will light up when it is receiving power.

Step 4: Add the Driver to Aqara Home

  1. Open the Aqara Home app and make sure your Aqara hub is online.
  2. Tap the + icon in the top-right corner and select Add Accessory.
  3. Choose Roller Shade Driver E1 from the device list or scan the QR code on the device or its packaging.
  4. Press and hold the button on the driver for 5 seconds until the LED begins flashing rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  5. The app will search for the device. Once found, assign it to a room and give it a name such as "Bedroom Blinds."

Step 5: Calibrate the Travel Limits

Calibration tells the driver where the fully open and fully closed positions are. This step is essential for accurate control.

  1. In the Aqara Home app, open the Roller Shade Driver E1 device page.
  2. Tap the Settings gear icon and select Set Upper and Lower Limits.
  3. Use the app controls to move the shade to the fully open position, then tap Set Upper Limit.
  4. Move the shade to the fully closed position and tap Set Lower Limit.
  5. Confirm the limits. The driver will now accurately move between these two points.

Step 6: Expose to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa

If your Aqara hub supports HomeKit or Matter, the Roller Shade Driver E1 will automatically appear in Apple Home once paired. For Google Home or Alexa, open the respective app and link your Aqara account. You can then use voice commands like "Hey Siri, close the bedroom blinds" or "Alexa, open the blinds to 50 percent."

Tips for Best Performance

  • Keep the driver within 10 meters of your Aqara hub for a reliable Zigbee connection. Zigbee-connected devices between the hub and driver can act as signal repeaters.
  • If the chain slips during operation, re-seat it in the gear channel and verify you are using the correct bead-size adapter.
  • Set up automations in the Aqara Home app to open shades at sunrise and close them at sunset for hands-free daily control.
  • Check the battery level periodically in the app if you are not using a constant power source.
